According to the Guardian, the 26 year old was arrested on Thursday and remains in jail today. Texas has some of the strictest abortion laws in the country and recently passed legislation that rewards civilians who turn in people for abortions as much as $10,000 for doing so.

The Rio Grande City Sheriff's Major Carlos Delgado said that she was arrested and served with an indictment on the charge of murder.

The young woman is being charged for a law that will be revealed later.

Activists have been warning for years that this would happen as anti-choice activists win court battles. It was feared that someone would be charged with murder or jailed for exercising a Constitutional right. The fear is justified because oppressive legislation that ban LGBTQ+ access to healthcare have already created mental health crises for many.

According to the World Health Organization, unsafe abortion is a leading cause of maternal deaths. If a person survives an unsafe abortion, it can cause physical and mental illness, social and financial struggles and more.

With less access to reproductive healthcare, pregnant people are driving hours to see the same doctors. There is no world in which making abortion a felony will lead to better health outcomes for anyone.
