A high school teacher in Virginia says he is suing a 10th grade student who he says targeted him in a string of racist abuses.
A teacher at Menchville High School in Newport News told WAVY that a student left a banana outside of his classroom door in a deliberate act.
Someone left a banana at my door. Mungo told WAVY that the banana was placed perfectly in the doorway.
The bananas play on a racist stereotype.
After the sixth incident, Mungo reported the issue to school administrators, who used the footage to determine that the culprit was one of their 10th graders.
The student had a chance to come clean. I asked him if he did it, and he said he didn't know what I was talking about. There are six other teachers. No other teachers were involved.
The 2020 student body at Menchville High was almost 40% white, 34% black, 15% Hispanic, and about 5% Asian.
Mungo told WAVY that the student was suspended for two days. A person for Menchville High School did not respond to the request for comment.
When the parents were contacted, they seemed to be embarrassed. Mungo told the outlet that the parents were irate when the student was suspended. It's ridiculous to have a hate crime. I was sick.
WAVY reported that Mungo is in the process of pursuing legal action. Mungo did not respond to Insider's request for comment on whether he had retained a lawyer or filed a suit.
I am fed up with the racism at our academic institutions. The bomb threats, the nooses, the bananas, and now it is streaming into public education, come from the HBCUs and other colleges.
He said that it was time to take a stand and let people know that it would not be accepted. I know that I am not going to tolerate it. You have to speak up. You cannot allow it to go on because it will just continue.
