Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness isn't just a wider look at the multiverse, it's possibly their first glimpse at America Chavez. The gay teen is strong and can hop between universes via star-shaped portals. Over the past decade, the character has become a fan-favorite due to her appearances in her own short solo comics and team books.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Casey talked about how he felt when his creation became a blockbuster. He hasn't been paid enough for his work, even though he first made the character with Dragotta.
When he learned of Chavez's big screen future, he contacted Marvel to get paperwork for that compensation, but said it was a pittance. A specific number wasn't given, but previously it was reported that the creators of comic books would only be paid 5000 for adapting their work into films and TV shows. At the time of writing, he hasn't gotten a counter offer, and he feels like he is being stonewalled.
The principle of the matter is more important to the publisher than the particulars of the creator. He told himself he wouldn't create a character for the company, even though he knew about the issues. I wouldn't expect to be respected by a corporation.
He hopes that by bringing more light to the issue, the comics publisher will offer a better deal for its creators. There are still flaws in the way that creators are treated.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released on May 6.
