If you watched the Season 1 finale of Severance, you may be entitled to compensation. There are no Lumon perks for you. Thought-provoking discussion is what we at Mashable have to offer.

We finally got to see some of our favorite Innies in the outside world, but the finale left fans with a lot of questions. There are still concerns about the baby goat department, the Lumon Board, and the Eagan family, though fans have some solid theories about the work of the MDR team.

When the hell is Season 2 is the most pressing question on the heels of Severance's Season 1 finale. There are 20 burning questions about the show to get your brain chips in a tizzy.

1. What's up with the Lumon Board?

A woman (Patricia Arquette as Cobel on "Severance") sitting an an office desk in front of a speaker and a man (Tramell Tillman as Milchick) standing behind her.

The Lumon Board is mysterious. They hide behind crackling speakers, communicate only through Natalie, and have spoken a single word throughout the first season. A happy day!

In the pilot, we first learn about the Board when Cobel meets with Mark to let him know he is the new department chief and Petey is no longer with the company. Cobel says that the Board is present, but won't be making noise at the meeting. It was a classic. The Board does not believe that a severed person can regain their memories. She can present her data at the Eagan Family Gala. They fired her for trying to cover up Helly's suicide attempt and spent a lot of time at Mark's sister's house.

Oh fuck off, Natalie. Is the Board there? Cobel asked after he was fired. Ben Stiller's voice unexpectedly replies "yes" through the speaker.

How many board members are there? Who are they? Who hurt them? Is Helly still on the Board even though she has been severed? Why did the Board allow Cobel to walk out the door? She knows a lot.

2. What is MDR doing with the numbers on their computers?

Three characters in Apple TV+'s Severance sitting in front of their computers.

We know the leading theories: Dylan thinks that the group is blowing up eels with probes so that a desperate humanity can populate the sea, and Irv thinks the group is cutting swear words out of movies. We still don't know what the computers are doing.

Mark told Helly that each category of numbers presents in such an order as to elicit an emotional response in the refiner.

One theory is that Lumon is learning how to manipulate people's emotions. The four tempers that define human beings are woe, frolic, dread and malice. Four progress bars were labeled "WO for woe, FC for frolic, DR for dread and MA for malice" by an eagle-eyed user.

Maybe the company is trying to understand the tempers of the employees? The companion book to Lumon, The Lexington Letter, suggests that corporate espionage could be caused by MDR.

The files that are carefully selected by superiors have names like Siena, Pacoima, Tumwater, and Eminence. According to Dylan, the team completes one in five files on average, which is better than it used to be. What is the top secret that cannot be shared with severed employees? Is the numbers meaningless? Maybe they aren't doing anything worthwhile. What was Mark's freshman mistake?

3. Sorry, can we talk about the baby goats?

A man sitting in a room full of baby goats.

Explain yourself, sir! Credit: SCREENSHOT: APPLE TV+

In Episode 5, Mark takes Helly on a mental health walk and they hear a baby goat crying, which sounds a lot like a crying baby. There is hay, a small white fence, and 10 baby goats in a white room that is ajar. The man says that Mark and Helly are not ready. You cannot take them yet. They are not ready. It is not time. Get out of here. Go! * nervous laughter!

We have seen a goat-like figure in the halls before. Remember when the two men met and admired the painting of the four tempers? There is a robed goat in the painting on the ground. The painting was recreated by the waffle party dancers. The baby goat department might have something to do with the painting. Possibly! The only other theory we have at the moment is from Helly, who laughs and tells Mark that he figured it out. Normally we would laugh along with her, but we can not discount the theory that the goats lay the eggs.

4. Waffle Party: WTF?

A stack of three waffles on a plate next to a glass of milk.

Can we all admit these waffles look delicious AF? Credit: SCREENSHOT: APPLE TV+

Let's get this 888-405-7720 888-405-7720 What was that waffle party about? Who else thought that a waffle party meant a sad cart of waffles for the office and the refinery would get a small amount of sugar from the syrup? I'm pretty sure no one had eaten a stack of delicious waffles, went to the founder's bed, and prepared for a Lumon orgy on their Severance bingo cards.

The party features people in masks that look like the four tempers from the painting, two women, a jester, and a horned goat/ram. They dance in front of the refiner of the quarter, who also wears a mask of Kier, and sits on his bed with a cat that has his nine core principles printed on each tail.

Had Dylan stayed, what would have happened when he broke into the security office early? The bizarre work-related sexual experience was described as an ultimate employee perk, but we still have questions. Would each refiner have the same waffle party experience for their employees? Who are those dancers? Has a severed employee become pregnant at work without her knowledge? The waffle chaos in Season 2 will not be forgotten. You have some explaining to do.

5. Why do eggs keep coming up?

A platter of dark red (beet pickled) and white deviled eggs.

Coveted as fuck. Credit: SCREENSHOT: APPLE TV+

Eggs are a cursed Lumon food. We know that the Optics and Design team once claimed they were doing an egg drop challenge in the team building room, and that Kier had a favorite breakfast of three raw eggs with milk. What about all these eggs? The egg bar was necessary for the story, according to Ben Stiller, and perhaps Irv needed something soft to smash inside the handbook. I wonder if there is an egg-citing storyline to come. Did the goats lay them? Tell me.

6. What does the O&D team do, and what was that ideographic card Dylan stole?

MDR meets O&D Credit: APPLE TV+

We don't know what the baby goat department is for, we don't know what the computers are doing, and we don't know what O&D is doing.

O&D was thought to be a two-person team consisting of Burt and Felicia. We assumed they were solely in charge of art, handbook totes, maintaining the office aesthetic, and whatever other issues arose. Irv learns in Episode 4 that the team has seven members. They spend their days creating different objects, from hatchets to watering cans, and no one knows why. My initial thought was that it was related to farming baby goats. The best guess is that they are making supplies for the executive wing upstairs.

There are stacks of ideographic cards that Dylan was analyzing before he entered the room. Dylan put the card in his back pocket, which contained a graphic instructing two people to carry out certain body movements. The overtime contingency was enabled and Dylan's Outie was woken up in hopes of getting the card back.

Mark suggests that O&D and MDR work together to figure out what is happening on the severed floor, so we hope to see more of that in Season 2.

7. Is Ms. Casey/Gemma still alive?

A woman (Dichen Lachman Ms. Casey in "Severance") standing with her hands clasped in an office.

At the end of the season, part-time Innie Ms.Casey is sent back down to the testing floor after she tells Mark that her life has only been 107 hours. When you think her existence can't get any bleaker,Milchick sends her down a dark hallway and she takes the elevator to the department Petey told Mark about.

In the 7th episode, we learn that Mark's wife, who was supposedly killed in a car accident shortly before he started at Lumon, is actually Ms.Casey. The two people don't remember each other as severed Innies, but right before the finale ends, Mark's Innie sees a photo of Gemma and connects the dots. But is she?

The company has a connection to car crashes since a severed employee died in one. One theory suggests that Lumon is in cahoots with the hospital and takes brain-dead patients or people in comas to the office to be severed. Those patients are declared dead to the world and live at Lumon full time. Some people wonder if Mark was told about the car crash before Lumon did, and if she worked for Lumon before she died. Maybe it is possible that Ms.Casey is trapped on the testing floor. Maybe her Outie is dead, but her Innie lives on.

8. What's up with Harmony Cobel's (aka Ms. Selvig's) Eagan shrine?

A framed photo of a man surrounded by candles.

No thanks! Credit: SCREENSHOT: APPLE TV+

Fans have largely forgotten to discuss the Eagan shrine at Cobel's house because of the amount of things that happen on this show. There is a framed photo of a young girl in front of a school, diplomas, a waffle party-esque mask, and a ticket to a festival. After Lumon fires her, Cobel trashes the shrine at the foot of it.

Cobel wants her mother to come back to life in some way to remember her, so she pushes for Mark and Ms.Casey to remember each other. There is more to Cobel's story that needs to be told in Season 2.

9. Speaking of that shrine, just how big is the cult of Eagan?

A statue of a bearded man with white hair.

Is this a museum figure or a preserved body? Who knows! Credit: SCREENSHOT: APPLE TV+

The philosophy of the Eagan family is not limited to Lumon. Cobel's shrine proved that for some it is essentially a religion, and we learn that the Eagan presence overlaps with education, medical facilities, banks, and more. We know that the local Pip's Bar and Grille is named after the former Lumon CEO, Phillip Eagan, and that the characters live in or near the PE area. How much influence does this family have? Is Kier Eagan still alive, or is he just down on the floor with a bunch of other people?

10. While we're on the Eagans, what the hell did Helly's dad mean by "my revolving"?

A man with white hair in a dark room.

This guy is...off. Credit: SCREENSHOT: APPLE TV+

James Eagan, the current Lumon CEO and presumed son of the Lumon founder, seemed unstable at that event. He confronted Innie in the bathroom about her attempted suicide.

Are you still in pain? He thanked her for agreeing to speak at the Gala after he cried in his bed when he was told what she tried to do to him. You will sit with me at my revolving one day.

What is a revolving? Is it a ceremony where they appoint a new Lumon CEO, send him to the testing floor, and pop a breathing tube in him?

11. What else can we learn from the security office?

We got a lot of insight into Lumon, its employees, and other ways that those severed chips can be used when Dylan broke into the security office. Fans are wondering if Cobel and Mark's sister are severed because of the names of other severed employees.

There are abbreviations for other departments on the control panel. Dylan scrolls past nine other system functions, which means that the severed chips are able to do more than just make employees forget. We need to know more, but the functions and possible uses are as follows:

  • Group mind control? Hive mind? Is it possible to summon severed workers to Lumon? Is it getting warmer?

  • Branch transfer is as simple as moving severed employees to different departments.

  • I fear that this may be used to wipe out severed employee memories.

  • They say an elephant never forgets, so maybe this function restore full memories to Innies or Outies.

  • I assume the feature stops a severed person.

  • Glasgow is likely not a Scottish accent, but one that can send severed people into comas. It was very bad.

  • Ted Lasso would say this feature makes employees forget or gives them short bursts of memories.

  • This feature is likely to put an Innie or Outie to sleep.

  • If overtime awakens the Innies outside Lumon, does open house bring the Outies inside? There is pure chaos.

12. Is Irving's Outie trying to make his Innie fall asleep?

Sleeping on the severed floor of Lumon is not allowed, but that doesn't stop Irving from nodding off every now and then. Irv has nightmares of black sludge in the office when he doeszes off. Now that we know that Outie Irv is an artist who paints black on canvases, we can assume that black sludge is in Innie's nightmares. Fans believe that when Innies sleep, they can access severed memories in a sense, or at least tap into their Outie's mind.

While downing black coffee, Irving paints the dark hallway that leads down to Lumon's testing floor multiple times, but he does it while he goes home. Does he want his Innie to crash at work so that he can dream? Time will tell.

13. How does Irving know about the testing floor?

A painting of a dark hallway with an elevator at the end.

Has Irving had to watch Burt go down that elevator? Credit: SCREENSHOT: APPLE TV+

I wonder how Irv knows about the painting of the hallway. We know it exists because we saw it, but Innie Irv would have to have seen it before to know what it looks like.

There are many theories as to why Irv's Outie is painting that hallway. Some fans think that Irv and Burt worked together on O&D. It makes sense that Irv would be on the design team. It is thought that Irving and Burt worked together on O&D and fell in love, so Lumon separated them. It is believed that they both had their memories wiped with the Clean Slate feature on the security office computer system, and that Irving was moved to MDR using the Branch Transfer feature. Fans think that despite the rumors of a coup, the legendary duo found their way back to each other, even after being separated and reset. Is anyone else crying? Tell us there is another explanation.

14. Can we learn more about Petey's time at Lumon?

A hand drawn map of a building's floorplan.

There are a few departments that need to be investigated. He drew three houses off to the side and wrote "Some people might live here", which remains a mystery. He drew a number of twisting hallways, symbols, and people that make no sense. Petey tried his best to recreate the map when he met Mark's Outie, which makes me think there is more to learn from it.

I am curious about how he got the Break Room tape and connected with the former Lumon employee who implanted the chips in their heads and helped Petey escape the severed floor. She seems to have cracked her way back to normal.

15. Is it actually possible for severed employees to safely reintegrate?

A man with white hair sitting in a restaurant booth.

The Lumon board seems pretty sure that the procedure is permanent and irreversible, but we know that Petey was helped to regain his memories in the real world. Petey died after escaping Lumon because of horrible reintegration sickness, which included headaches, nosebleeds, and disorientation. Can severed people regain their memories?

The procedure didn't kill Petey, but she claims if he had followed her post-op instructions, things would have gone differently. Will we see her deactivating some chips in Season 2? Let's hope so.

16. How many people are severed out in the real world?

A woman in a hat and coat, standing in the snow while holding a baby.

Welp, this scene was concerning. Credit: SCREENSHOT: APPLE TV+

At the beginning of the series, it was believed that Lumon only severs people for work, but we learn that the wife of a pro-severance senator underwent a procedure before giving birth to her third child. Senator Arteta is involved with Lumon and he supports the legalization of the procedure. We see the political couple again. She 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266 800-381-0266

How many other people are walking around with chips in their brains if she is stealthily using the procedure out in the world? Imagine how dangerous this technology can be if she can use the chip to forget. Is Ricken's weird-ass friends just annoying?

17. What's the deal with the crystal head cubes?

A crystal cube with a photo of four people engraved into it.

For bopping Milchick's head? Credit: SCREENSHOT: APPLE TV+

Mark's desk has a crystal cube that is etched with his portrait and the words "Mark S - Allentown" on it. Dylan says that the cube is just something they gave him, to which I ask, "Why?" Does O&D make them? I have not noticed that the creator of Severance has a picture of his own crystal head cube in his profile photo. Dylan wants a crystal cube engraved with a new group photo as his prize for being the Refiner of the Quarter. He takes it to the waffle party and then takes it to the security office and sets it down. I think he will use it as a weapon to hit Milchick over the head.

18. Why is Outie Irving investigating Lumon?

A man (John Turturro as Irving on "Severance") sitting on a bench outside looking up to the sky.

When the overtime function is enabled, Irving's Innie wakes up in his Outie's house and finds a box of his father's Navy gear in his closet. There is a lot of Lumon-related documents hidden underneath old uniforms, including newspaper clippings about severed workers, Lumon invoices, a list of severed employees, and a map of Kier, PE. Outie was doing Lumon research, but why?

19. What happens post-overtime?

A man sprinting down a white hallway.

Look out: Milchick's the boss now. Credit: SCREENSHOT: APPLE TV+

Dylan had no choice but to release the overtime switches, which restored Mark, Helly, and Irving to their Outie selves. What happens now? Dylan is trapped at work by himself. With Cobel and Graner gone, is there anyone else left to run the floor? I am still wondering who operated the overtime contingency when Cobel and Graner were busy.

If the other three refiners ever take the elevator back down to the severed floor, they will be flooded with memories. Mark will know that Ms.Casey was his wife, Helly will be aware that she is an Eagan. There is a chance that the Innies could have their memories wiped, but the damage is already done outside. Helly set that Lumon gala ablaze, Mark's sister wants to take his story to the press, and Outie Burt and Outie Irv are about to meet. The first step is flipping the overtime function. We hope they have a bigger plan for Season 2.

20. Before I go, can the Severance team publish The You You Are by Dr. Ricken Hale?

Ricken's book would be a hit in the Great Resignation era. Stiller recently revealed that the author of The You You Are is also the author of The Lexington Letter, so why not pub that as well? Outies need Ricken's wisdom.

Apple TV+ has Severance on it.
