NASA's Doug Hurley reminisced about working with Musk before he flew on a historic flight to space and back in 2020.
In an interview with Fox News, he spoke about his impressions of Musk, the billionaire space race, and a new documentary, "Return to Space", which follows his journey and that of fellow astronauts Bob Behnken.
Musk and his company made history in May 2020 when they successfully launched two astronauts into space. The astronauts ship docked at the International Space Station.
It was the first time a commercial spaceship delivered humans into space.
Musk and Behnken had a lot of concern for their safety when preparing for the launch.
He wanted to ensure that the mission would be successful but that we would come back to our families.
One thing most people don't get to see about Musk is his human side.
A lot of people don't get to see that side of the person. I witnessed a man who was concerned about his family and well-being. I will always be thankful for that because I am still here.
The US had not flown humans to space from American soil since 2011. Musk resurrected American crewed spaceflight for NASA but also kicked off a new era of commercial spaceflight with the 2020 mission.
One thing that wasamazed by Hurley the most was Musk's incredible grasp of the technical situation.
He wants to understand all of it and you can talk to him about it. He is very hands-on, and you have the experts of the system on site to address those questions.
Musk has a mixed public reputation.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Musk's on-and-off romantic partner, the musician Grimes, described him as both the love of my life and someone who says stupid shit. The coronaviruses panic is dumb in March 2020.
Musk joined the board after buying up the firm's shares and becoming its biggest shareholder. One of the employees expressed annoyance at the development, with one changing their name to "elon Musk is a racist demagogue with a god complex."
