  • The show makes the children do things that are too young for them.

  • Old Enough has been a hit in Japan for more than 30 years, but is new to the US.

Old Enough will likely have the hearts of some parents.

Kids as young as 2 are taking on tasks such as shopping for groceries, walking a mile to and from home, and navigating public transport on their own.

The child is filmed from a distance while they perform tasks set by their parents and the makers of the show.

The series has been on Japanese TV for more than 30 years.

The first season is available on Netflix

The first season of the show was filmed in 2013 and will be available on the streaming service this year. Each segment takes about 20 minutes and focuses on one child.

Hiroki, an adorable 2-year-old, is dispatched to a local supermarket in the opening episode. He was sent on the mission by his mom with a 1,000-yen bill. She told him to buy fish cakes, curry, and flowers.

subtitles are used to translate the commentary. The commentator jokes that we follow the sound of Hiroki's shoes as he pads along the side of the road.

Hiroki is proud of his actions and the boost in his confidence is touching to see. He earned a pat on the back from his parents for demonstrating huge independence.

The adventures of the kids in Old Enough are carefully planned by their families. The camera and safety crews are trained to intervene if something goes wrong.

2 experts are torn on the show

Two parenting experts who spoke with Insider had different takes on the show.

The president of Let Grow said she was encouraged by the series.

Skenazy said it was nice to turn on the TV and see a show where kids were happy and successful.

She said that the parenting culture in Japan was more relaxed than in the US.

Skenazy believes that embracing freedom and trust is good for grown-ups and kids.

The author of books on parenting had reservations about the show.

She said that the tasks that adults ask them to perform have to be appropriate for their development.

Carey said that the show made young children figures of fun and laughing at them by asking them to perform tasks they are not ready for.

It is not known if the show will be as popular in the US as it is in Japan, but the kids will no doubt delight some viewers and horrify others.
