  • Saldivar wants everyone to know the signs of a stroke.

Christina Saldivar had the worst headaches of her life when she went to the bathroom one Monday in February 2020.

She thought she was having a good time at first, but then she realized she was losing a lot of blood.

She was in and out of consciousness on the bathroom floor after she felt sick. She knew something was going on when she was not on the stall floor.

Saldivar asked the teacher to take her class to their next unit after she called her colleague using her Apple watch. She said she did not need a nurse, but when her headaches got worse she changed her mind.

She remembers saying she wanted her mom, a comment that the technician seemed to mock.

She had a clean bill of health, but later learned she had a stroke. Saldivar is speaking out to raise awareness of strokes in young people and to encourage everyone to recognize the signs.

Saldivar said she had to wait hours for a brain scan

Saldivar doesn't remember much about her hospital visit, but her family and boyfriend told her they waited hours to be seen.

Saldivar's mom asked her boyfriend to leave the area to collect himself because he was so frustrated with the lack of urgency.

He was right about the brain scans. She had suffered a brain injury and was bleeding in her brain.

If we had waited any longer, I would not be here, said Saldivar.

She was treated with a coil that stops the bleeding and can be inserted through a catheter into the brain. Doctors did not need to shave her head or operate through her skull, something other patients have undergone.

She was released about two weeks later and feels lucky to have recovered quickly. Many survivors of brain anyeurism take a long time to regain their ability to talk, walk, and eat.

Saldivar was driving within a few months and returned to teaching about a month after that. She received lots of get-well cards from students, and was celebrated at an end-of-the-school-year lunch.

Strokes are unusual in young people

Donald M. Lloyd-Jones, president of the American Heart Association, told Insider that only 10% of strokes occur in people younger than 50.

When there is a disruption of blood flow to the brain, it is called a stroke.

Some factors, like race and a family history of strokes, are not controllable, but others, like not smoking and managing blood pressure, are. Smoking can increase the risk of estrogen-containing hormonal birth control.

The severity and length of any complications that follow if patients are treated quickly can include infections, pneumonia, paralysis, speech and swallowing difficulties, memory loss, and even a propensity for profanity.

Lloyd-Jones said that minutes matter in terms of saving brain tissue and brain function. The acronym FAST stands for face droop, arm weakness, speech difficulty, and time to call for help to identify stroke symptoms.

She said that sharing her story would help people realize that there is no age limit.
