Mike Gibbons, a leading Republican Senate candidate from Ohio, said at a media event last fall that middle-class Americans don't pay any kind of fair share.

The middle class in the United States doesn't pay any income tax, but the top 20% of earners do.

The comments by Gibbons, a millionaire investment banker from Cleveland, were made in a September episode of The Landscape. They could take on new resonance after Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida introduced a governing plan in February that has divided the party over its call to raise taxes on millions of Americans who don't earn enough to pay federal income taxes.

Scott, who leads the Senate Republicans, has said that paying a small tax would make poor people more interested in how tax dollars are spent.

McConnell and other leading Republicans distanced themselves from Scott's proposal because they worried that it would prompt attacks from Democrats.

Gibbons does not support raising taxes on businesses or individuals, according to his campaign spokesman. She said that he signed a no-tax pledge.

Ahead of the May 3 primary, Republican rivals are looking to use the comments against Gibbons. One opponent, Republican Mark Pukita, has had it posted on his YouTube page with the caption "Tax Hike Mike Gibbons" for the last three weeks.

During a Republican Senate debate last week, Jane Timken, the former Ohio Republican chair, said she opposed Scott's proposal to raise taxes on the middle class.

In the video, Gibbons is pictured before a campaign backdrop and criticizes Democrats for their narrative that the middle class is getting screwed and the wealthy are cheating everybody.

How much of the total tax bill can a very small percentage of the nation pay and still be a democracy?

President Joe Biden included aBillionaire Minimum Income Tax in his budget proposal. A firefighter and a teacher pay more than double the tax rate that a billionaire pays, according to the Democrat who announced the tax proposal.

The Tax Foundation analyzed the most recent Internal Revenue Service data and found that the top 10% of Americans earn more than 50% of their reported income. The bottom half of American wage earners pay less than 3% of their income in taxes. The middle 40% of Americans pay 26.1% of the income taxes.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a left-leaning think tank, argues that the figures do not reflect the wealth of high-income Americans who are not taxed as much.
