The State Department says it is unable to account for gifts given to former President Donald Trump and other US officials by foreign governments.

The Executive Office of the President did not submit information about gifts received by Trump and his family from foreign leaders in 2020, according to a report to be published in the Federal Register next week. The General Services Administration didn't submit information about gifts given to White House staffers.

The National Archives and Records Administration and the General Services Administration have access restrictions that prevent them from giving the missing information to the State Department.

The situation was reported in footnotes to a partial list of gifts received by U.S. officials in 2020. The office publishes the lists to guard against potential conflicts of interest. A preview of the 2020 report was posted on the Federal Register website on Friday.

When the Biden administration began, the protocol office neglected to submit the request for data to all reporting agencies, which may have caused the lack of gift information. There was a lack of adequate recordkeeping when Trump took office and when he left the White House.

The State Department report comes as House lawmakers are investigating reports that Trump took boxes of classified materials with him to his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. The National Archives and Records Administration asked the Justice Department to look into the matter.

The House panel investigating the insurrection at the Capitol has found an almost 8-hour gap in the official White House records of Trump's phone calls as the violence unfolded, according to two people familiar with the probe.

The department made attempts to collect the required data from the current authoritative sources, but it has confirmed that potentially relevant records are not available to the State Department.

The data that is needed to complete a complete listing for 2020 is unavailable.

Records for senior diplomats, Pentagon and CIA officials are included in the limited 2020 report, as are gift records for Trump administration officials.
