Will Smith was banned from attending all Academy events for the next 10 years, according to multiple news outlets.

Smith will not be allowed to attend any Academy events or programs in person or virtually for the next 10 years, according to a letter obtained by multiple media outlets.

Smith's resignation from the Academy doesn't prevent him from being nominated for future awards.

Rubin and Hudson apologized for failing to adequately address the situation in the room and expressed their gratitude to Rock.

Rubin moved up the board meeting to discuss punishments for Smith after he resigned from the Academy last week, as the group was no longer legally required to give him a 15-day notice that he could be suspended.

The Academy's Board of Governors is made up of 54 people, including actresses and directors.

Jada Pinkett Smith, Smith's wife, lost her hair due to an autoimmune disorder, and Rock joked about that during the Academy Award ceremony last month. Smith apologized to Rock and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts after he slapped Rock on stage. During a stand up show in Boston, Rock said he was still processing what had happened, and declined to file a police report. Smith resigned from the Academy last week and said he would accept any punishment imposed by the group.

Smith's popularity plummeted after the slap, according to a Morning Consult poll. Smith was viewed favorably by about 50% of Americans, down from 80% in January 2020.
