Scientists released a new study yesterday that could fundamentally change our understanding of the physics of our universe.
The study took more than a decade to complete and was published in the journal Science. Weak force is one of the most fundamental rules of the physical world and is governed by a particle called a W boson.
According to the scientists involved in the study, the particle appears to be larger than previously thought. It means that a lot of what we know about physics might fall down.
It would be a huge deal if this is true, and not some systematic bias or misunderstanding of how to do the calculations, because it would mean there is a new fundamental ingredient to our universe.
The Duke University physicist who led the study told the newspaper that the results took so long to understand because they concern 450 trillion particles colliding. The team used the best particle collider at the time, the Tevatron collider in Illinois, but the readings from which still have scientists crunching numbers.
It may have taken a while, but if these scientists are right, it would be a huge blow to the way we think the universe works.
The Pentagon has a report about radiation burns and other strange claims.
