The 116th Supreme Court justice was confirmed by the Senate on Thursday afternoon, making her the first Black woman to ever serve on America's highest court.

All 50 Democrats and 3 Republicans voted in favor of confirmation.

This is important on many levels. There are no limitations for young black girls who want to be lawyers. Miller said that Justice KBJ broke the glass ceiling.

Cape Cod perspective

The co-vice president of the League of Women Voters Cape Cod said that Brown Jackson's record speaks for itself.

She is the cream of the crop, Morrison said. We appointed a black woman to the highest court after 233 years. This is a win for democracy in these times.

What is the Supreme Court? Everything you need to know about the Supreme Court.

Morrison, who is a board member of the Massachusetts Women of Color Coalition, the Cape Cod branch of the NAACP and the Barnstable County Human Rights Advisory Commission, touched on the importance of representation for Black women, not just in the Supreme Court, but throughout all positions of power in America.

She said that any great or strong nation is based on its demographic makeup in its legal and legislative bodies. We will get more things right when we start to get more inclusive.

John Reed, president of Cape Cod's NAACP chapter, said that Brown Jackson is over qualified for the position. She is the first justice in three decades who has spent time as a public defender, and he noted the importance of her varied experience as a lawyer.

She is an access point for people to look for real justice.

Brown Jackson's performance at her congressional confirmation hearings was applauded by him.

It's one thing to ask intelligent questions, but to ask a judge what a woman is is ridiculous.

He said that some of them acted like clowns.

Cool under pressure

Miller was amazed at how well the judge kept her cool during the confirmation hearings.

She said she was impressed when she first became aware of her.

She felt that some of the lines of questioning were an attempt to undermine Brown Jackson.

She said that they couldn't get her on character, intelligence or experience.

Morrison said that Black excellence is a big part of American society.

Morrison said that she didn't watch much of the hearings, partly because of her schedule, but also because she felt they were reminiscent of the 1991Anita Hill hearings where Hill testified against Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas on accusations of sexual harassment.

Reminder of Anita Hill

She said that it would have been too painful to watch because she felt like it was like what Hill had to go through. As a Black woman, Brown Jackson's record was exceptional. I think it's important to know how important this is.

The Supreme Court will be the most diverse in history.

At the end of the day, Brown Jackson came out on top despite Morrison feeling that the confirmation hearings were at times nonsensical.

Morrison said that her strength, character and academic record persevered and got her through. The American story should include people of color, women and other groups. Women of color are on the rise.
