Seattle Mariners, SS J.P. Crawford agree to five-year, $51M contract, sources say

Sources familiar with the deal said that J.P. Crawford and Seattle are in agreement on a five-year, $51 million contract, tying him to the organization through his prime years.

Crawford has emerged as one of the best defensive infielders in baseball and is a fixture in the leadoff spot for the Mariners, who narrowly missed the playoffs last year and expect to contend in the American League West for the foreseeable future.

Crawford was acquired by Seattle in the middle of last year, and the team has viewed him as its future infielder. The commitment in the deal is indicative of that.

The contract Crawford signed with the Mariners this year will pay him $5 million, slightly more than the $4.85 million he was previously scheduled to make, and includes a $5 million signing bonus. Crawford will receive $11 million in the final season of the deal after he has accrued $10 million per year.

With limited long-term deals on the books, the Mariners have significant financial flexibility as they look to build on 2021.
