Sources familiar with the deal said that J.P. Crawford and Seattle are in agreement on a five-year, $51 million contract, tying him to the organization through his prime years.

Crawford has emerged as one of the best defensive infielders in baseball and is a fixture in the leadoff spot for the Mariners, who narrowly missed the playoffs last year and expect to contend in the American League West for the foreseeable future.

Crawford was acquired by Seattle in the middle of last year, and the team has viewed him as its future infielder. The commitment in the deal is indicative of that.

The contract Crawford signed with the Mariners this year will pay him $5 million, slightly more than the $4.85 million he was previously scheduled to make, and includes a $5 million signing bonus. Crawford will receive $11 million in the final season of the deal after he has accrued $10 million per year.

With limited long-term deals on the books, the Mariners have significant financial flexibility as they look to build on 2021. They will start the season with one of the most promising prospects in the game, as well as a full season of hard-throwing right-handed pitcher, and the additions of reigning American League Cy Young winner, and outfielder Jesse Winker and right-handed pitcher, Robbie Ray.

With Rodriguez, Winker, Jarred Kelenic,Mitch Haniger, Ty France, and others, the Mariners don't need to depend on Crawford's bat. Crawford had a career high in home runs last season, with nine.
