How did Stefon Diggs' $104M contract extension come together? (0:46)

The Bills have a $104 million extension with Stefon Diggs. (0:46)

The Buffalo Bills were limited by the knowledge of Stefon Diggs.

When he was traded to the organization in March 2020 for four draft picks, most of what he knew about the Bills came from Buffalo's 27-6 win over his former team, the Minnesota Vikings.

Before he got to Buffalo, he knew he wanted the Bills to be his last team. The last stop of his career. He was confident that it would work out.

I wanted it to be my home, and I didn't want to ever leave it.

With so much draft capital involved, it was not known if the deal would be a success.

Brandon Beane said that time will tell if the move for Stefon was right.

Just over two years later, Diggs entered a news conference room with his family by his side, dressed in Bills blue. He had just signed a four-year, $104 million extension that ties him to the team through the 2027 season with the idea of retiring in Buffalo.

The former fifth-round pick was correct in his prediction that it would work out.

I knew Josh Allen was a good quarterback when I watched him beat us. I had faith in Josh.

In Buffalo, he found a place to be himself. He wanted to stay for the long haul because of his relationship with Allen. It was surprising to see how much it felt like home to Diggs when he came to Buffalo.

When I got it here, they took a real chance. I didn't feel any pressure to be anyone but myself. Being yourself brings comfort to me and I feel like I am in a great place. It makes you happy. I can just be myself and they love me up.

With two years remaining on his previous deal, the Bills decided to extend the wide receiver, who earns the second-most guaranteed money of any current wide receiver at $70 million.

The Bills are trusted for acquiring the right pieces. I can say that I'm a little bit of a prime example. Our defense was tied for first in most categories last year, because they brought the right guys in. Every year is a new year and I see us trying to get better.

While several wide receivers received record-setting deals, Diggs never panicked or got too involved in negotiations, preferring to let his agent handle that. When the agreement was done, there was a sense of gratitude.

I want to prove why I got paid the first time and I'm on another track. I am a part of a team that is one of the best in the league.

In two years with the Bills, he has earned his first two Pro Bowl appearances, including a career- and franchise-record-setting performance in 2020 with 127 receptions and 1,535 yards. Among players in their first two seasons with a team in NFL history, he is the first and fourth.

His biggest step forward has come off the field. When he got to Buffalo, he set a goal to become a captain quickly.

I wanted it so bad in my first year. For the first time in his career, he earned the honor.

Sean McDermott said at the recent league meetings that Stevie has done a great job of changing the culture. A lot of the other players in the locker room also have a great dynamic with Josh. The results are out there, because he works so hard at it.

The results have helped Allen grow into one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL. The Bills were the first team to give a quarterback and a receiver the same amount of money.

Three of Buffalo's top players, including Allen, Diggs and White, have signed through at least the 2025 season.

Von Miller signed a $51 million fully guaranteed deal with Beane, who took care of a need at pass-rusher. The Bills spent the off-season improving a roster that has almost no holes, and they still have eight picks in the next draft.

The Bills believe the ceiling is for this team.
