New York Attorney General Letitia James asked a judge on Thursday to hold former President Donald Trump in contempt of court for refusing to comply with a subpoena in her investigation into the Trump Organization's business practices.
The attorney general's office wrote in a motion that Trump did not comply with the court order to turn over the documents.
In February, the New York State Judge ordered Trump to comply with the subpoena and testify.
James said in a statement that Trump refused to comply with the subpoena and turn over relevant documents.
The Trump Organization said in a statement to Forbes that the motion was completely baseless and that any responsive documents were previously provided to the AG.
After Michael Cohen told Congress that Trump and his company lied about the value of assets for financial gain, James began the investigation. The probe centered on whether Trump overvalued his assets to secure loans, while undervaluing them to save on his tax bill. James wrote in a separate court filing last month that the Trump Organization had misstated asset valuations for over a decade, and included an example of financial statements from 2012 to 2016 that listed Trump's triplex apartment in Trump Tower as more than 30,000 square feet.
The New York Attorney General's office said in the filing that the order was not an opening bid for a negotiation or an invitation for a new round of challenges to the subpoena.
