Heather McLarry was in Texas when the disease hit. She didn't have a job lined up and was struggling to pay her rent.

The 22-year-old told Insider that he didn't know what to do with his life.

She remembered watching Dean Unglert from The Bachelor in Paradise share his van-life journey a few years ago.

It was a lifestyle that might work for her. She said it was cheaper than renting an apartment, she could work seasonal jobs, and a van would allow her to explore the US, something she had never done before.

I never really traveled before I moved into this tiny- home, living-on-wheels lifestyle.

McLarry bought a minibus for $3,000 in 2020. She decided to upgrade to a 2015 Shasta Oasis camper after 15 months in the so-called skookie.

McLarry upgraded a camper she found on Facebook.

McLarry was able to see new parts of the world, meet incredible people, and learn about herself.

She bought the cheapest vehicle she could find to test out the lifestyle and her bus was unreliable since she loved living on the road.

McLarry said she was ready for an upgrade after 15 months in the bus. She said she startedgging on Facebook on the day and night.

McLarry was open to buying a camper, RV, or another bus. She wanted to find the newest home within her budget.

When she saw the 2015 Shasta Oasis camper for sale, she knew it would be her home.

McLarry reached out to the owner three minutes after he posted the listing. She bought a camper and a truck at the end of November 2021.

The budget was under $1,000.

McLarry knew she wanted to make changes when she saw the camper. She said it was ugly and brown.

McLarry said that everything was in great condition, but it was ugly.

She wanted to spend less than $1,000 on the renovations, which included fixing the water pump.

The cost of renovations can vary greatly. Insider has previously reported on renovations costing between $2,000 and $100,000.

She used her minimal budget to make simple changes that would make her envision a colorful, homey feel.

She said that cheap purchases, like a can of paint, completely transformed the space.

McLarry said the renovation was a bit of a trial and error. She started by picking colors that she thought were similar.

The first thing to do was paint the cabinets.

McLarry said the cabinets in her bedroom didn't match her bedding, which was terracotta-colored.

She painted the bedroom cabinets black.

She was happy to experiment with different colors because a can of paint was not too expensive.

She searched for furniture and decor at thrift stores.

She turned to Facebook again to fill her camper with furniture and decor. McLarry said she can find cheap and unique items on the platform.

While scrolling through pages of decor, home appliances, clothes, and furniture, she found unusual pieces, like a rattan chair, that complemented her camper's colors and space.

McLarry said the items were affordable and helped her stay within her budget.

The countertops in the kitchen and bathroom were updated with contact paper.

McLarry did not have a lot of renovation experience, but knew she wanted to change the bathroom and kitchen countertops.

McLarry used contact paper to transform her space for a few dollars, instead of replacing the countertops in the bathroom and kitchen that would have cost hundreds of dollars.

She found a wood look in the bathroom and a white marble pattern in the kitchen.

The paper, which sells for $11 on Amazon, completely transformed the rooms and helped both spaces feel updated and newer.

McLarry wanted a colorful atmosphere.

McLarry decided to use the same approach to her kitchen back splash that she used when she saw how simple and affordable the contact-paper countertops were.

She filled the space between the kitchen counter and the overhead cabinets with peel-and-stick tiles.

McLarry chose bright tiles to add more color to the kitchen.

Her room was transformed by floral wallpaper.

McLarry chose a dark color scheme for her bedroom.

McLarry added floral wallpaper to the open space of the camper's room, which had built-in cabinets around the bed.

McLarry incorporated some of the same wallpaper into her living room because she wanted her bedroom to transition into the living space.

She said that stick-on wallpaper is easy to replace, which will allow her to continually change and update her home.

McLarry focused on updating details like knobs and lighting.

When McLarry received the camper, the cabinets had silver knobs that didn't match her vision.

She replaced them with wooden knobs that were in line with her color scheme.

McLarry didn't like the camper's overhead lighting. She found string lights on Amazon for less than the cost of an electrician to replace it.

She plugged the hooks into an outlet and turned them on.
