Jackson is the first black woman to be confirmed to the Supreme Court. Judge Jackson will be an associate justice of the highest court in the nation, a role she will be appointed to for the rest of her life.

The D.C. native was a district judge in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. She was appointed by President Joe Biden to fill a seat in the US Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

Jackson will be the first justice on the Supreme Court to have experience as a public defender. Jackson was an assistant public defender from 2005-2007 and argued before the appeals court about 10 times. Several defendants who couldn't afford private counsel were represented by the two-time Harvard grad.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced the final vote on Wednesday evening and expressed his praise for Judge Jackson ahead of the final confirmation vote on Thursday.

He said that it was a momentous day and that the Senate would finally confirm him. I believe the first of more to come will be Ketanji Brown Jackson.

The senate voted to end the debate on Judge Jackson's nomination, removing the last roadblock to her confirmation. All 50 democrats voted to move proceedings along.

The confirmation of Judge Jackson was announced by the Vice President. The United States Senate voted 53-47 to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve as an Associate Justice on the United State Supreme Court.

Jackson is not expected to start her new job until Justice Stephen Breyer retires this summer. She will begin hearing cases in October.
