On April 2 was a typical Saturday for Buth.

The man from Wind Lake was riding his bike at the park, which covers 626 acres in both Franklin and Hales Corners.

Buth's daughter likes deer and he stopped to take pictures and video of one of them.

He noticed something strange. There was something stuck to the deer's head.

Luckily, the deer in that park are used to humans, so I was able to get relatively close.

A short video of the encounter was posted on Buth's YouTube channel.

This was not the first sighting of the deer

There have been reports of people seeing a doe at the Wehr Nature Center.

Bryant said that the arrow did not hit an arteries or vital parts of the body.

The rear of the arrow protrudes from near the back of the doe's head with the sharp end emerging between the deer's nose and left eye in Buth's images and video.

When I got home, I realized that the arrow went all the way through the picture.

DNR warden says weapon used was a crossbow

Sam Haferkorn said that the arrow is called a bolt because it came from a crossbow.

The incident is upsetting to him.

Haferkorn said that what happened to the deer does not show a good example of the protection of natural resources.

Haferkorn said the incident is not being investigated as a poaching case because officials are still gathering information.

He said that if people have information, they can give it to the Department of Natural Resources through its confidential tip line.

Haferkorn asked if this was an occurrence of a common complaint, or if this was a legal attempt to harvest on private property.

An Ozaukee County deputy's body camera video shows an injured bald eagle being saved.

Buth has his own thoughts.

I know there was a problem with deer in that area and I have heard many stories of people illegally killing deer.

Bryant did not say that in a lot of words, but he struck a similar tone.

When an animal is injured in this park, we assume it came from illegal activity because we are surrounded by areas that are not hunted.

The incident shines a light on illegal hunting in Milwaukee County parks

Haferkorn said that there have been complaints about illegal activity in the parks of Milwaukee County.

He said the parks give deer a lot of food, water and habitat. He said that people feed deer, which is illegal in Milwaukee County, and that provides another dependence for them.

Haferkorn said that they become habituated to people and vehicles and that creates a recipe for them to shoot crossbows.

Civil or criminal forfeitures, revocation of hunting privileges, and the use of equipment used in the crime can be involved in the penalty for shining and shooting deer at night.

Feeding deer can result in civil forfeiture.

The deer is in good condition despite its injuries, DNR wildlife biologist says

Despite its injuries, the doe seems to be in great condition, according to Nathan Holoubek, a wildlife biologist who has been following the case.

When I first became aware of it, I was expecting it to slowly decrease over time, but it has remained robust and healthy.

He said that fact is remarkable.

He said that the likelihood of an animal sustaining this kind of injury is very low.

Officials have no immediate plans to try to remove the arrow

What is next? Can the bolt be removed or trimmed?

Not likely, he said.

He said that animal capture is very challenging in an urban environment and often ends with fatal injury to the animal when they get scared and run into traffic. There are no rehab facilities within the state or out of the state that could legally handle an adult deer for surgery.

Bryant agreed.

Bryant said it was a lot of stress to try to dart a deer with anesthesia and collect it to try to fix the issue.

Bryant said thanking the park visitors who act as their eyes and ears is one of the lessons from the incident.

If you ever see an animal in distress, or something that looks suspicious, people should not have a bow and arrow in this park, unless they are at the archery area.
