The invasion of Ukraine by Russia is a warning that world democracy has gotten $$$[y and confused at a time of growing support for authoritarianism, according to former President Barack Obama.

Obama said that Putin represented a particular reaction to the ideals of democracy but also globalization, the collision of cultures, and the ability to harness anger and resentment around an ethno-nationalist mythology.

The consequences of that kind of toxic mix in the hands of an autocratic government is what we are seeing.

The University of Chicago's Institute of Politics and The Atlantic hosted a seminar titled "Disinformation and the Erosion of Democracy" in which Obama spoke.

Putin's authoritarian control of news in Russia was an example of the increased proliferation of misinformation on a worldwide basis, according to Obama.

If we don't get some things right, the future for the coming generation will be difficult and violent.

The fall of the Berlin Wall and the Cold War led to a return to the old ways of thinking about power, place and identity, he said.

The rule of law, freedom of press and conscience are things that democracies tend to take for granted in their democracy.

He said he didn't know if Putin was the same person who was leading the charge as he was as president.

The degree to which the nature of war has changed, where everybody is seeing exactly what is happening on a real-time basis, is what he did not fully anticipate.

It was too early to tell what the future of the conflict would look like, according to Obama.

I would not only try not to predict what Putin would think, but how the Ukrainians would view it.

In a conversation with Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, Obama said he underestimated the degree of vulnerability in democracies.

Roughly 40% of the country believes that the current president was elected fraudulently, and a similar percentage believes that vaccines are useless to fight the COVID-19 epidemic.

If that is true in our society, imagine how we would process information if we weren't getting it.

It was important to restore democracy at home to prevent Putin and authoritarians from taking advantage of it.

For all the times we didn't live up to our ideals, for all the times we made mistakes on the international stage, and for all the times we were hypocritical in how we applied our faith and democracy, if we get democracy right.

Tech companies and social media have made democracy more difficult because of their product design that monetizes itself by exploiting divisions, according to Obama.

It was the second time in two months that Obama appeared publicly in Chicago, the site of his future presidential library, after an appearance at the Chicago Council of Global Affairs.

His latest Chicago appearance also marked another step in what Democrats hope is increased public visibility and activism leading up to the midterm elections in November, with Democrats facing headwinds in keeping control of the U.S. House and Senate.

Obama made his first visit to the White House since Donald Trump became president. The 12th anniversary of theAffordable Care Act was marked by him and Biden. The act will expand health care coverage.

Obama said that the debate over the act had been clouded by misinformation and that the act had become more popular as millions of people obtained healthcare coverage.

Even though that was not always the case, Obama acknowledged that people would be able to keep their doctor under the plan. He said that under the law, we are not forcing you out of employer-based health care.

I believe that what I said was correct, he said.
