The headline is on the verge of being ridiculous. You would need a special license to drive it in some countries. The capacity of the battery is almost double that of anything else on the road. A time of three seconds. It has more than 300 miles of range, despite the worst efficiency of any electric vehicle we have driven to date.

If all that sounds like overkill to you, or if you already think EVs are a good idea, you are not the target audience for GMC's new Hummer EV.

The Hummer EV is being positioned as an all-electric super truck with zero emissions and zero limits. It is supposed to convert theurious over from gasoline or diesel to electrons. Think of Rivian R1T as a rival to the blue-collar Ford F-150 Lightning fighter.

The idea of dusting off the old Hummer's tooling started to come up in the year 2014. It wasn't until the advent of the new Ultium battery platform that it was possible to resurrect the problematic nameplate. The first Hummer EV Edition 1 deliveries have started already, thanks to the battery platform and Ultium Drive electric motors.

It’s big!

The Hummer EV's battery pack is between the axles and underneath the cabin. The battery makes up nearly a third of the Hummer EV's mass, and it consists of 24 Ultium modules, which are double-stacked to provide a net capacity of 212.7. The pack is protected by a large structural frame bolted to the Hummer EV's body. Since the truck is supposed to be able to handle itself off-road, there are shear panels and skid plates.

The Hummer EV has independent suspension and air springs. The standard height of the suspension gives the truck 10 inches of ground clearance, which grows to 11.9 inches in Terrain mode or 15.9 inches in Extract mode for use if you high-side the truck on an obstacle. The Hummer EV has an approach angle of 44.3 degrees, a departure angle of 33.7 degrees, and a breakover angle of 25.4 degrees. The maximum fording depth is 28 inches. Water shouldn't get into the battery pack, and you can ford streams in an EV.

The $112,595 Hummer EV launch edition has a single front-drive unit with a locking differential and a motor for each rear wheel. The three motors make for a combined 1,000hp and over 1,000lb-ft.
