According to recent reports, Apple's A-series chips in the iPhone are going to be replaced by custom Silicon chips.

The MariSilicon X image processor was the first custom chip launched by Oppo. The company's chip design team is developing an application processor and an entire custom system on chip for future Oppo devices, IT Home reports. Like Apple, Oppo is looking to TSMC to make its chips.

It Home suggests that the custom AP will be manufactured by TSMC. The AP and modem will be integrated with the full system in 2024, according to reports. The chips could be used in entry-level mobile products first before increasing market penetration over time, since they aren't comparable to offerings from Qualcomm and Mediatek in terms of efficiency and fabrication processes.

According to i News 24, the push toward custom chips is being driven by issues with gps and poor thermal performance caused by the Exynos 2200. It hopes that it will be able to mirror Apple in taking multiple considerations into account with its custom chips instead of just putting performance at the forefront.

The movement is seemingly part of a trend of increasing ambition from Android smartphone brands to rival Apple more directly and become the world's biggest smartphone brand, with Oppo laying out plans to aggressively compete in the high-end smartphone market.
