He started his shoe business on a pig farm. The richest person in Taiwan is a man who has built his fortune making sneakers for some of the world's biggest brands.

The 74-year-old is the richest self-made newcomer on this year's Forbes World Billionaires list.

The founder of the firm produces shoes for brands such as Nike and Vans. More than 180 million pairs of shoes are churned out by the company every year.

He has a low profile because of his success. Taiwanese media calls him a shoe king.

Humble beginnings

After graduating from an agricultural college,Zhang worked in a women's shoe factory, according to Taiwan's Business Weekly.

He started his own shoe factory in the 1980s despite his limitations.

I had no money at home, so I had to live within my means. He told the magazine in a rare interview last year that people buy good plots of land to build new buildings.

The pig farm was located next to paddy fields in western Taiwan and produced quality shoes despite its shabby exteriors, according to the magazine.

Zhang spent money on good materials and his equipment was never inferior to other people.

By the late 1980s, he had established several footwear ventures across Taiwan and in the southern province of Guangdong. Guangdong is known as the world's factory, where everything from handbags and shoes to Christmas decorations is made for export.

Business Weekly reported that Zhang saw an opportunity to set himself apart. The type of shoes used by skateboarders for their rubber soles was vulcanized. vulcanized shoes were not popular with shoemakers at the time because they were unfashionable and signaled low profits.

Other people in the industry gave up on them, but I wanted to focus on achieving good quality.

When these shoes became trendy in the 1990s,Zhang was able to produce them for the likes of Vans and Converse. The magazine said that the brand had filed for bankruptcy in 2001. When Nike acquired Converse, it was on their recommendation that they work with Zhang.

In 2004, Zhang officially set up the company, and today it has factories in China, Vietnam, and Dominica.

He told Business Weekly that there is no mystery to his success.

To get to the bottom of it, you need to know if you can do better than others.

Insider reached out to Zhang but did not get a response.
