It is a story that is touching the hearts of people in North Mississippi.
A boy who was homeless and living under a bridge gave up his dog when he couldn't support her.
Kris Robinson said that she has had a lot of dogs taken in by the shelter, but none like Jada and the 17-year-old who brought her in.
My heart broke for him. Robinson said that he was sad to have to bring his dog up here.
A picture of Jada laying on the floor at an animal shelter went viral. She was sad after her owner left. The 17-year-old boy told Robinson that he was homeless and couldn't afford to take care of the four-month-old rottweiler/shepherd mix.
She was holding onto him around his legs. She would move whenever he moved. She has become friends with him. Robinson said that he has had her since she was little.
Jada will be fostered, according to Robinson. Many people from around the country have offered to help the 17-year-old and Jada.
There were some offers from people that would house him and he could bring the dog with him and find a job. There is help out there if he is willing to do that.
Robinson said she admires the young man for giving up his dog.
Robinson said that the boy has more integrity than a lot of people around here who dump animals and puppies when they can't take care of them.
Tom Dees tried to find the boy, but could not. If you are experiencing homelessness in a rural community, what resources are there?
More than 1,000 Mississippians were homeless in 2020. That is according to the US Interagency on Homelessness. More than 50 young adults went homeless in the Magnolia State in 2020.
When it comes to helping the homeless, the churches play a big role.
If it is cold, most of the time, the request is to get them off the street for a night or two. The problem is that we don't have the big services where we can recommend them like shelters and that kind of thing.
The Methodist Church, Baptist Church and Presbyterian Church fill in the gaps in the area, according to the First United Methodist Church in Senatobia.
We have a ministerial alliance where we pull together resources and talk to each other about how to help.
Many people looking for help come from the church.
In a town like Senatobia, people will usually go to the church for help. Trying to find a place to stay for the night.
The help doesn't stop with the temporary shelter.
We try to get them something to eat and if they need gas to get somewhere else, we will give it to them. We are a short-term solution for a long-term problem.
