FabuLingua won the City Spotlight: Austin pitch-off! The company won a free exhibition space at the TechCrunch Disrupt after competing against knowRX Health and Vertikal X.

Three Austin-based investors found Mark's pitch clear, concise and easy to follow.

Mark explained that his company teaches kids Spanish through games and stories. He likened FabuLingua to a popular education product that teaches math through a similar service.

Kids interact with stories and games that give them new functions as they progress. In invisible learning, the text is written in Spanish and read in English. The English helpers are dropped by the service and the child is given Spanish instructions. More stories are unlocked when the child explores the FabuLingua world. The service is available through a monthly subscription.

The Bergerts founded the company. While Mark is the CEO, he made it clear in his pitch that the direction of the company is led by a polyglot. He says that her passion for teaching languages pushes the company forward. She earned a psychology degree after studying linguistics at Oxford University, where she was raised in a multicultural environment. She received her masters degree in social anthropology from Cambridge University.

More than 80,000 downloads, 15,000 registered users and over 1,000 families pay for the subscription is what the company says.

FabuLingua raised over one million dollars in pre-seed funding rounds. The company raised $322,983 through Wefunder, which has a $7.5 million valuation cap. FabuLingua is still accepting new investors through Wefunder, and the campaign is active.

There were two companies in the pitch-off. David Franklin pitched knowRX Health, which connects with sponsors and collaborates with physicians and builds a community of patients for clinical research. Vertikal X is a marketplace for athletes based on technology.

Special thanks to the wonderful Austin-based judges: Krishna Srinivasan, co-founder of LiveOak Venture Partners; Bryan Chambers, president of Capital Factory; and Sarah Brand, founding general partner at True Wealth Venture.
