Jean-Luc Picard emotionally examines his old Enterprise combadge.

The news that Patrick Stewart would be returning for Star Trek: Picard's third and final season shocked everyone. Terry Matalas was happy to answer a few questions after the initial excitement wore off.

Matalas spent a lot of time yesterday teasing out what fans could expect from Picard's final outing. First and foremost at the forefront of everyone's minds, are these just brief appearances, or will we get to spend a lot of time with the crew? Picard's third season is a proper send off for the crew at large.

Matalas teased a reference to the complaints from Riker in the climax of Picard's first season. The premiere of the second season of the series featured a glorious fleet of classic ship designs and is familiar to Star Trek Online fans.

It is more than just starships and extended appearances. Matalas focused on the return of Michael Dorn as Worf when answering fan questions. There is a fascinating challenge to contemporary Star Trek presented by Worf. When Star Trek: Discovery first began, the race underwent some radical aesthetic changes, but even with some changes in the second season, we haven't seen a modern look. Will fans remember him or will his design be updated to reflect the changes on Discovery? Matalas said that it would be the former:

Matalas touched on more than the aesthetic of Worf. After the TNG, he went on to be a major player in Deep Space Nine, and survived the war. Even if this is a TNG love-in, being set in the wake of that conflict, even if Picard is a good couple decades beyond it now. Matalas believes that it is going to be a big part of the character's story.

The series might touch on how the Federation was rebuilt after the Dominion War, or the possibility of cameos beyond TNG in the season. When Picard returns for his third and final season, you're going to be getting a lot of love from the fans.
