A startup that promised users $20 worth of its currency hasn't paid anything out or even launched nearly a year after its launch, according to a report.

People across Africa were offered the Worldcoin payment at mall booths where employees would use a spherical silver to scans their eyes, with operators sometimes claiming the $20 would appreciate by at least 500 percent in value. Critics charge that the goal was to provide digital money to everyone in the world, but also to collect data for poorly defined purposes.

An Orb operator told BuzzFeed that they don't care what happens to you as an individual.

One Worldcoin customer scanned his eyes at a mall and was so angry he sent a text to reporters thinking they were Worldcoin staff.

The man told the pub that he was robbed of his money.

Look Away

There is a long history of companies and governments taking advantage of communities of color around the globe. The British wanted more control over finger printing in India. During the War on Terror, the US lured residents in Iraq under false pretenses. Worldcoin collects sensitive personal and medical information from people in low-income countries without even giving them a penny.

It's illegal to export biometrics data in some countries, and Worldcoin sent its Orbs there. Others don't allow any transactions at all.

Unless you count the leaders lining their pockets with investment dollars, it's unlikely Worldcoin will help anyone.

They have now mined almost all of the digital currency that will ever exist.
