The Atlanta Dream obtained the No. 1 pick in the draft from Washington. The draft is in New York. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.
The Dream will get the 3rd overall pick and the right to swap with the Los Angeles Sparks in the first round. The Dream obtained the rights to that in a trade for guard Chennedy Carter.
This is the second year in a row that the No. 1 pick has been traded. The New York Liberty traded the pick to the Seattle Storm, who then traded it to the Dallas Wings.
Washington won the draft lottery. The last time the Mystics had the top pick was 1999. Elena Delle Donne was limited to three games by back issues last season as Washington missed the playoffs. She is expected to play this season.
The Dream wanted one of the two projected top two picks, and it seems that they were able to get one of them.
Atlanta has missed the playoffs four of the past five years. It got new ownership in February of 2021, with a new coach in Tanisha Wright and a new general manager in Dan Padover.
In 2009, Atlanta took Louisville guard/forward Angel McCoughtry, who spent nine seasons with the Dream and became a two-time Olympian. She is a member of the Minnesota Lynx.
