Sources familiar with the deal told ESPN that Jose Ramirez and the Cleveland Guardians are in agreement on a five-year, $124 million contract extension.
According to sources, the deal includes a no-trade clause. Ramirez is guaranteed $150 million with this year's pickup of a 2023 option.
The Indians picked up Ramirez's $12 million contract option on Nov. 5 after he was named the American League's Most Valuable Player. The formal transaction gave the franchise some room for longer-term negotiations.
Ramirez, who has finished in the top three of the American LeagueMVP voting three times in his career, was one of the few bright spots for Cleveland's inconsistent offense during the team's final season. He hit.266 with 36 home runs, 103 RBIs and 27 stolen bases in the final year of his four-year, $26 million contract.
Ramirez said after Cleveland finished 80-82 last year that he would like to stay. I want to stay here the rest of my career. We have to wait and see. I would love to see what they have to offer.
Terry Francona was unafraid to talk about the future of the veteran during spring training in Arizona.
During a March 17 media availability, Francona said that Jose knows how he feels about him. I hope it doesn't make him crazy. I don't think it does.
The star infielder's future in Arizona was addressed by the general manager of Cleveland.
I think we will have some internal conversations about the new deal.
The only position player left from the Cleveland team that lost the World Series is Ramirez. Francona told reporters last month that it was safe to use Ramirez in the third spot in the batting order. The Kansas City Royals will be the opening game of the year. In that game, he will become the 12th pitcher in franchise history to make three consecutive opening day starts.
Francona will be back in regular-season action for Cleveland after missing time because of toe surgery.
It has been a hard couple years and Francona doesn't want to act like a big baby. It has not been easy.
