  • The only way to stop Putin from invading is for the US to send troops into the country, said Gen. Mark Milley.

  • He said he was against it because it would lead to an armed conflict with Russia.

  • Zelenskyy was upset by NATO's refusal to engage with Russia on Ukrainian soil.

The top US general said the only way to stop Putin was for the US to send troops into Ukraine, an action he and President Joe Biden have both opposed.

Gen. Mark Milley told the House armed forces committee that he was not sure if he was deterrable.

It would have risked armed conflict with Russia if the US had been able to deter Putin from invading Ukraine.

The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly asked the US and NATO to send troops and enforce a no-fly zone over his country.

NATO supplies military and humanitarian aid instead of direct intervention.

President Joe Biden said on March 11 that a military incursion into Ukraine by the US or NATO would start a new world war.

He said that they would defend every inch of NATO territory with the full might of a united and galvanized NATO.

We will not fight a war against Russia. World War III is a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia. We must strive to prevent that.

Speaking on Tuesday, Milley said he wouldn't have advised sending US troops into Ukraine to deter Putin.

Putin put Russia's nuclear-weapons program on high alert as the West announced sanctions on Russia. Western officials believe that the readiness of Russia's nuclear program has not changed.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has slowed in recent weeks, with officials warning that Putin was preparing for an all-out attack on the Donbas region.

The region is located in eastern Ukraine and contains pro-Russian regions. Russia recognized the Ukrainian territories as independent states days before the invasion.

Russian and Ukrainian officials continue to negotiate for a cease-fire.

Zelenskyy said that talks would continue despite the evidence of Russian war crimes.

Russia is accused of killing hundreds of people in the town of Bucha, near Kyiv.
