What's A Woman? GOP Senators Stumble On Their Own Question To Ketanji Brown Jackson

The Republicans mocked Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson for refusing to define the word during her Senate confirmation hearing.

The Republicans on the Judiciary Committee don't agree on how to define a woman, and some wouldn't give a definition at all.

I don't have anything for you on that, said Sen. John Kennedy.

John Cornyn said he was not going to indulge you.

Even though she made this an issue with Jackson in the first place, Sen. Marsha Blackburn dodged the question three times, citing her policy of not talking to reporters in Senate hallways.

The first day of Jackson's hearing last month, the Tennessee Republican tossed out a question: "Can you define the word woman?"

Jackson asked if he could provide a definition. I'm not a Biologist.

The fact that you can't give me a straight answer about what a woman is underscores the dangers of the kind of progressive education that we are hearing about.

On the next day, Cruz told Jackson that she was the only Supreme Court nominee in history who had been unable to answer the question.

The real aim of the question was to try to corner Jackson on the issue of trans women participating in women's sports, which is part of a broader attack on LGBTQ people. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is pushing for child abuse investigations of parents whose children seek gender-affirming medical care. Florida has a new law that forbids teachers from talking about sexual orientation or gender identity to students younger than fourth graders. More than 300 anti-LGBTQ bills have been tracked by the Human Rights Campaign.

In a follow-up email to HuffPost, a spokeswoman for Blackburn said her definition of a woman is two X chromosomes.

The spokesman didn't respond to questions about whether or not women with only one X chromosomes should be considered women or if men with two X chromosomes should be considered men.

A woman is born with two X-chromosomes, according to a written statement by Sen. Chuck Grassley.

A woman is defined by the dictionaries as an adult female person and an adult female human being. Do senators agree?

I have a more traditional view of what a woman is.

What is that?

My wife.

Lindsey Graham thinks most Americans can figure out who is a woman and who is a man.

The birds and the bees have been a topic for a while, but I think I remember some of the differences.

A woman is an adult female of the human species, according to Sen. Mike Lee.

The senator from Missouri was bolder than most.

Someone who can give birth to a child is a woman. It doesn't seem that complicated to me.

Is a woman still a woman if her uterus is removed?

Yeah. I don't know, would they? Yes.

He was asked if he would consider a woman to be a woman if she lost her reproductive organs to cancer.

Cruz immediately answered that a woman is an adult female human.

He denied looking it up in a dictionary.

Cruz said that he was a Homo sapien with two X chromosomes.
