The Russia-Ukraine war would be a very long conflict, Gen. Mark Milley told Congress on Tuesday.
The fighting in Ukraine was likely to go on for a long time, according to Milley.
Even though we are a month into the war, it is still early. There is a lot of ground war left in the country. Milley said that it was at least measured in years.
He said he didn't know about a decade, but at least years for sure.
Milley said that NATO, the United States, and all of the allies and partners that are supporting Ukraine are going to be involved in this for quite some time.
He told Congress that invading Ukraine was a long-standing objective of Putin.
Milley said that he would not advise against using US military forces to deter Putin from his goal.
In his testimony, Milley said the invasion of Ukraine was the greatest threat to peace and security of Europe and the world he had seen.
The US is likely to increase the presence of its troops in the region in the long term, according to Milley.
Milley said that it was a good deterrent and that he would recommend to create permanent bases, but not permanently station.
The cost of moving families and housing them abroad at military bases in Europe would not be incurred by this.
On Saturday, the US Department of Defense announced that it would be giving Ukraine an additional $300 million in weapons and medical aid and that it would help transfer Soviet-made tanks to Ukraine to boost the country's defenses.
