Almost all of us would like to be a fly on the wall during a particularly juicy conversation or disappear into the background after an embarrassing gaffe. Invisibility cloaks are a staple of fantasy fiction.

There have been many attempts to create invisibility tech. Invisibility Shield Co. is a startup that helps you fulfill that dream of being invisible.

The person standing behind the shield seems to disappear as you can see in the images. lenticular lensing is a fun optical phenomenon where a series of thin, cylinder-shaped lenses are arranged parallel on a surface.

tilt cards are one of the most common uses for lenticular lensing.

A tilt card. There is a science alert.

The basic principles of lenticular lensing are the same as when we are talking about an entire invisibility shield.

Each shield uses a precision engineered lens array to direct much of the light reflected from the subject away from the observer, sending it sideways across the face of the shield to the left and right.

The strip of light reflected by the standing/crouching subject is very diffuse when spread out horizontally on passing through the back of the shield.

Light coming from behind the shield is similar to the rows of horizontal bumps on tilt cards, but instead of light entering and exiting the card at different angles from the front, here light comes from behind the shield.

As it enters the array, light hitting the sides is stretched out to cover the entire surface, making the image behind it blurry.

The shield is good at maintaining the integrity of horizontal lines, but it is less effective at showing vertical lines behind a person because the lens on the shield are vertical. In the image below, the tiles disappear as much as the person, while the dark edge of the step is intact.

Alex Dinovitser, a metamaterial physicist at the University of Adelaide, told ScienceAlert that it's like a waveguide that guides the rays around the object. The structures that direct the waves into a specific direction are referred to as waveguides. Most of the time, these are used in electronics, but optical waveguides are also used.

The principles behind the product Invisibility Shield Co. have been around for a while.

Ian Charnas, an engineer and YouTuber, has an instruction manual on how to craft your own.

This technology wasn't invented to just have fun with your friends. Hyperstealth was marketed as a tank obscuring device. The closer you are to the lens, the better lenticular lensing works. It isn't helpful for military needs to just visually cloak something. Different obscuring devices are required for different things.

There are many different technologies. This technology is not the same as making a plane invisible to radar.

The surface is designed to absorb the light or radiation. VantaBlack is the best material for light. It isn't the same as invisibility cloaking where the light goes through and around.

Invisibility research has been happening for the last few decades, and this shield is just one consumer-oriented product.
