The announcement of a new battery electric vehicle isn't headline making these days, according to Rick Schostek, the executive vice president of American Honda. There is a new EV every day, including an electric DeLorean that was announced yesterday.
This announcement is different.
The two companies are going to co-develop affordable electric vehicles. The vehicles are expected to hit North America in 2027. The partnership is centered around using the General GM Ultium EV platform and robust manufacturing capabilities.
The strength of the relationship between GM and Honda is the foundation of this collaboration.
This partnership's exact terms are not available at this time. Honda isn't specifying which vehicles will use GM's Ultium or Honda's e:Architecture platform at the moment.
GM and Honda will share their best technology, design and manufacturing strategies to deliver affordable and desirable EV on a global scale, including our key markets in North America, South America and China. We will put people all over the world into EV faster than either company could do on its own.
The partnership is about scale. Honda and GM have among the most robust manufacturing and distribution processes available and depending on the exact terms, should be able to leverage these strengths to quickly and efficiently flood the market with EV.
The Honda Prologue and Acura's first EV were co-developed by the two automakers. The two automakers are working together with Cruise to develop a self-driving Cruise Origin.
