A series of affordable electric vehicles built on GM's flexible EV platform with its Ultium- branded improved battery packs will be added to the partnership. The companies say they will begin production of the affordable EV in the year 2027.

Two years ago they announced they would work together to develop two Honda- branded electric vehicles. The exteriors and interiors of the new EV would be designed by the Japanese company. They will be manufactured at GM's North American plants, with sales expected to begin in the 2024 model year.

GM and Honda have a preexisting relationship when it comes to EVs

GM and Honda will share their best technology, design and manufacturing strategies to deliver affordable and desirable EV on a global scale, including our key markets in North America, South America and China.

The relationship between GM and Honda is related to EV's. The Japanese company is an investor in Cruise. The Cruise Origin, a pre-production version of which was first unveiled late last year, is part of the deal. The Detroit-Hamtramck plant of GM will be renovated for the production of electric and self-drive vehicles, where the new Honda EV are likely to be built.

The other automakers are getting along with each other. Ford and VW are working together on vehicles. Mass-produced battery-powered SUVs, pickup trucks, and sedans are what car companies are racing to build. Many of the same companies are testing self-driving cars, either as taxis to ferry passengers around cities or as delivery robots carrying groceries and other goods.
