According to the National Health Commission of China, 13,086 new Covid-19 cases were reported on Tuesday, up from 8,581 a day earlier.

The city reported new cases down from the previous day.

The restrictions will remain in place while the situation is being evaluated and the results of mass testing are analyzed, according to the city authorities.

Several subway lines have been suspended due to additional restrictions placed by local authorities.

More than 10,000 health workers from across the country have been sent to help deal with the outbreak.

The omicron sub-variant known as BA.2 is the cause of the ongoing surge in Shanghai. The first phase was limited to the Pudong financial district and nearby neighborhoods. The phase was supposed to end on Friday after several rounds of mass testing, but it was delayed because of weather. The eastern part of the city was supposed to re-open last Friday, but it is still locked down. The sheer size of the city which houses 26 million residents is one of the challenges the current one in Shanghai faces.
