Pete Carroll, the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, called out the owners at the league meetings in Florida for hiring candidates of color.
According to Adam Schefter, PeteCarroll spoke for 10 minutes during a meeting of general managers and coaches Tuesday, saying the hiring of minority candidates won't improve until owners accept that there are candidates out there different than themselves.
The league announced last Monday that all teams must hire an offensive assistant coach of color. The assistant can be a female or a member of an ethnic or racial minority, and must work closely with the head coach and offensive staff.
The new rule will not be enough for owners to change their ways according to the man.
The source said that he told the owners that they have to hire people who are different from them if they want to do anything.
The owners were not happy when they heard of the comments.
Only two of the nine head coaching vacancies this year were filled by coaches of color, with the Miami Dolphins' Mike McDaniels and the Houston Texans' Lovie Smith. Ron Rivera, Robert Saleh and Mike Tomlin are the only coaches of color in the league.
Brian Flores, the former head coach of the Dolphins, is accusing the league of discrimination. Flores, who was a candidate for multiple head coach openings, was hired as a defensive assistant by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
