Ajax manager Erik ten Hag and PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino
Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino are considered the realistic contenders for the Manchester United job

When it comes to appointing their next permanent manager, Manchester United can't afford to fail again, says Wayne Rooney.

The 36-year-old believes that Paris St-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino would prove to be a better fit than ten Hag at Old United.

At the end of the season, he suggested that Paul Pogba and CR7 should leave the club.

Rooney said thatPochettino has done it in the premier league.

He knows the league. He said that if he was choosing between those two, he would go for Pochettino.

He would need time and time would be good for him.

The former manager of Spurs, Mauricio Pochettino, and the current manager of Dutch club, Ten Hag, are both being considered to take over at the 20-time English champion.

There hasn't been a settled manager there since Alex Ferguson. Rooney said that the new manager needed time.

It didn't work with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and it hasn't worked with the new manager.

Pochettino knows how to work with top-class players and young players. They need to get that blend right because they can&t afford to fail again.

Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney officially retired as a player in January 2021 when he was appointed manager of Championship side Derby County on a two-and-a-half-year contract

During his 13 years at Old United, Rooney won the FA Cup, the League Cup, the Club World Cup, and the European Championship.

The club is set to go five years without a trophy after losing in the last 16 of the European Championship.

They are in the middle of the pack in the race to get into the top flight next season.

Rooney described United's 2021-22 campaign as a "strange season".

Rooney said that he has been to watch Manchester United a few times and it looks like a team of individuals.

They would like the season to end now and forget about the playoffs. They are not going to play in the competition.

They have to rebuild and put themselves in a place where they can challenge again for the title in three years.

With his contract due to expire at the end of the season, the future of France's Paul Pogba remains uncertain.

In August of last year, the Portuguese player returned to Old United after a two-year spell with the Bianconeri.

Rooney said that it would be better for Paul to move on.

He has not had the impact he would have liked. He has looked different for France. It has not worked at Manchester United. They need to let go of a few players.

Ronaldo has scored important goals, but you have to go with younger, hungry players if you want the future of the club to be bright. It is football, and that is what Cristiano is getting on with. He is a goal threat, but they need more in the rest of the game.

Rooney thinks the centre-back can still be a big part of the club's future despite the criticism he has received this season.

Rooney said that Harry looks like a world-class centre-back for England. He can be a big part of the rebuild if he regains his confidence.

They have good young players. I think Jesse Lingard should be playing. They have to get them to believe.
