This is the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, a four-door ultraluxury sedan, for just under $250,000. It is more satisfying to ride in a car than to drive it. To find out what ultraluxury really feels like, we got our hands on one with all the gadgets, including a refrigerator, heated massage seats, and more touch screens than an Apple store.
Shut the door behind you when you enter the rear passenger seats. The button on the ceiling does the job. The seat belt automatically extends forward, making it easier to grab. There are two seats with pillows inside. The center console has a refrigerator and temperature-controlled cup holders. Each seat has foldout tables that can be used for dining or working. Reach into the center console. The rear touch screens of the device can control multiple functions, including navigation, surround sound audio system, and multicolor ambient lighting.
There is a button on the side of the door that reclines the seat to 43.5 degrees. Extra legroom and an extendable footrest can be found in the passenger seat in front of you. You will easily doze off if you raise the rear-window blinds, close the panoramic sunroof and then go to sleep.
On top of the optional $3,200 walnut-wood dashboard is a 12.8-inch infotainment display. You can control the same functions on the rear but also a number for the driver. The touch screen can be used to raise the suspension of the car by 5 centimeters.
Driving a car is like floating on water. The active air suspension with level control uses adaptive absorbers at each wheel to keep the vehicle level even in the event of a side collision. The vehicle has rear-axle steering that can be adjusted to 10 degrees, which makes turning the monster easy. The interior is very quiet while driving. Mercedes does everything to reduce road noise. This includes tires with sound-deadening foam inside, thick laminated glass, and a high-tech sound system that cancels out road noise. Even on the highway, you ride in silence.
