Inna Sovsun, a member of the Ukrainian parliament, and Yahoo News Senior White House Correspondent Alexander Nazaryan discuss the latest in the country's efforts to defend against Russian attacks. There is a big frustration and feeling of betrayal on the side of all Ukrainian society, says Sovsun, talking about intervention by the U.S. that stopped delivery of MiG fighter jets from Poland.

The Ukrainian politician described the assault as the toughest night of the year, saying they were hearing explosions every 30 minutes.

In an interview with Yahoo News, Sovsun said that it was not de-escalation.

The peace talks in Istanbul last week were encouraging but did not produce a ceasefire. Russian forces have left behind evidence of their occupation, including the killing of civilians in the suburb of Bucha. Ukrainian officials have labeled it a crime.

They continue to plead for more help from Western nations that have pledged to stand with Ukraine but are also afraid of provoking the Kremlin into a direct conflict that could lead to World War III.

The Bucha massacre proves that Russian hatred towards Ukrainians is beyond anything Europe has seen since WWII, making any equivocation or delay on the part of the West inexcusable. The only way to stop this is for Ukraine to kick Russians out. Partners are aware of our needs. Heavy air defense systems. Provide them now.

The U.S. has given $2 billion to Ukraine in military aid, including surface-to-air missiles and exploding drones. The White House said it does not support a no-fly zone over Ukraine and that its military aid would be limited to defensive weaponry.

The U.S. said over the weekend that it would allow the transfer of T-72 tanks to the Ukrainians.

I believe there is only a military solution to this war, which would have saved thousands of lives, says Sovsun.

She says that any diplomatic solution requires us to compromise in our interests and the interests of our people. Ukrainians fear that Putin will use the return of Ukrainian land as a pretext to take more.

Sovsun told Yahoo News that talks with Putin were bound to give away too much of Ukraine for a peace that won.

The slaughter at Bucha was a grotesque reminder of the incoherence of the Russian campaign, which Putin launched under the guise of the purge of the Ukrainian government. He has lashed out at NATO and the U.S., offering a number of grievances, but none that would justify a war that has already killed thousands of civilians and soldiers.

I don't know what the goal is, I wish someone would tell me, because it is changing all the time.

Russia's army is not as strong as they expected. The army is still three times the size of Ukraine, acting on the orders of a leader she callspsychotic.

Even as social media users celebrate Ukrainian victories, military experts caution againstunderestimating a military known for engaging in long, grueling conflicts without regard for the human toll of such involvement.

The Institute for the Study of War says the war is far from over and could still turn Russia's way if the Russian military can launch a successful operation in eastern Ukraine. The assessment says that the victory around Kyiv was significant but not decisive.

The retreat from Kyiv could portend a turn toward counter-insurgency, the kind that led to victory in the second Chechen war, which Putin launched in 1999. The arrival of forces loyal to Ramzan Kadyrov in Ukraine could be a sign that the conflict will look like the one that destroyed the small, Muslim-majority republic to keep it from becoming independent. The site of last week's massacre was where the mayor said Chechen paramilitary units were operating.

We have the right to have control over that territory, but we can't do that with defensive weapons.

The distinction makes little sense to Rep. Victoria Spartz, who is the lone Ukrainian-born member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Sovsun believes that the defense of Ukraine could benefit Russia, and possibly even lead to the end of Putin's two-decade hold on a nation that once looked like it was on the path to democracy.

She predicts that if we can kick them out of our country, it will lead to changes in Russia as well.
