Sean Manaea

The Padres love a starting pitcher.

Sean Manaea was acquired for a couple prospects, one of whom can legally drink. Manaea was scheduled to start against the Padres yesterday for the A's, but then after the trade it ended up being the opposite. It is a small place.

Manaea came to the field and said goodbye to the guys. It was crazy to pitch against them.

The Padres can't guarantee the health or quality of any of their 12 starters. Yu Darvish is 35 years old, Mike Clevinger is going to start the season on the IL, andBlake Snell might be bad. They don't seem to trust Chris Paddack, who was the prime prospect every team couldn't get from the Padres until he had bad luck with base runners. In the second half of last season, Joe Musgrove fell off the face of the Earth when not every ball put in play against him got caught.

The Padres could have a dominant rotation if Darvish is healthy, Musgrove can carry it out for more than two months, and Paddack can strand a runner more than once a week. GM A.J. Preller doesn't believe in ifs. He thought he had covered all the bases last year, but ended up on the track as the Dodgers and Giants sprinted into the distance. Preller isn't going to sit around and wait for that to happen.
