FILE - Vanderbilt pitcher Chris McElvain, wearing an electronic signal receiver on his left wrist, throws against Oklahoma State during an NCAA college baseball game, Feb. 18, 2022, in Nashville, Tenn. A growing number of college baseball teams are moving away from the tradition of catchers using their fingers and hands for pitch signs. The NCAA this year is allowing teams to have a coach in the dugout press into a keypad numbers corresponding to different pitch types and transmitting the information to a wristband worn by the pitcher. When Ryan Ammons is on the mound, he will feel a sensation in his right arm.

Nothing is wrong. It is not a twinge.

He was told to look at the digital display on his wristband to find out the type of pitch he was going to throw next.

The tradition of the catcher wiggling his hand and flashing his fingers is disappearing for a growing number of college baseball teams. A coach in the dugout will be pressing numbers into a keypad and sending the information to the mound.

The pitcher knows the call is in when the wristband vibrates.

The technology, Game Day Signals, was developed by a small Virginia software development company and approved for use for the first time this season by the NCAA.

The pace of play has been a concern across the sport. The opposing team's ability to steal signals is eliminated.

Ammons said that he was a very fast worker. I was one of the first to sign up.

The teams using Game Day Signals as of early April were: Alabama, Alabama, North Carolina State, Virginia, James Madison, and Pacific. Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Penn State and Iowa are waiting for their orders to arrive.

Major League Baseball is experimenting with an electronic communication channel. The big league clubs tried out the PitchCom system in the second half of last season, and are experimenting with it during spring training. This year, PitchCom will be used at the Double-A level.

In college baseball, catchers typically look into the dugout to pick up pitch signs from a coach and then relay them with another set of finger and hand signs. The NCAA allowed catchers to have an earpiece in their helmets in order to get pitch calls from a coach using a walkie-talkie or clip-on microphone.

The catcher wears a wristband so he knows where the ball is going, but he doesn't play a role in the communication.

Craig Keilitz, executive director of the American Baseball Coaches Association, said that it is a natural evolution of the game. I think it's great.

The College World Series game times are tracked by the NCAA. Each of the last four years the CWS games have averaged more than three hours. CWS game times have averaged over three hours since 1996. The CWS games used to be under three hours.

Game length can be affected by variables such as number of pitching changes and amount of scoring, but the time between pitches can be reduced with Game Day Signals. If both teams used technology and combined for 280 pitches, it would take about 14 minutes.

Game Day Signals did testing in Virginia, which received an NCAA waiver to use the equipment. The catchers wore wristbands and used hand and finger signs to relay pitch calls. One-way communication from the dugout to players besides catchers had not yet been approved, so the pitcher did not wear a wristband.

Six ODAC teams used the device in a total of 121 nine-inning games. The average was 2:55 in the 96 games in which the device was not used.

Chris Cofer was a baseball player at the University of Virginia and a software developer at the parent company of the technology.

Game Day Signals was started by Cofer and Malay. Malay continued to refine the product and help lead efforts to get it approved by the NCAA Baseball Rules Committee after Cofer died.

Game Day Signals uses low-band radio waves with a range of 500 to 600 feet, and the battery life is five to six hours before it is needed.

The coach usually presses two numbers into his keyboard. It could mean low and away. The pitcher's wristband vibrates when the sign is sent. The pitcher can shake it off if he doesn't like the pitch, as he would with the catcher, and the coach can send in a new sign.

The use of the technology has expanded to the mound. All of the players in the field wear a wristband. The coaches can use combinations of numbers to call pickoff plays or make defensive adjustments.

The technology could be used to signal hit-and-runs.

Malay said it costs between $3,000 and $4,000 for a full package, which includes one coach's keypad and 10 player wristbands.

When the wristbands were brought out in fall practices, the players embraced them.

The transition from the old way to the new way has taken a little longer.

The bullpen guys liked it. The starters didn't like it, so I didn't have them do it. Our starters are not as good as our bullpen is right now.

The wristband has been used by two of the three weekend starters. See said he expects Anglin to be on board before long.

I think it has helped my game out tremendously being able to pitch at the pace I want to pitch at, and overall I think it was a great idea to put it into our.
