Starwatch chart 4 April 2022

The planets are always changing their configuration against the backdrop of fixed constellations, which is one of the perennial fascinations with the night sky. This sometimes proves frustrating.

The naked-eye planets are all low in the sky in the higher northern latitudes. We will begin and end this month with two close planetary conjunctions that are worth the effort, because observing them is difficult but not impossible.

The view from London on April 5, 2022, is shown in the chart. The stars of the show are Mars and Saturn, which will be very close in the sky. Mars will be red and the moon will be dusky yellow.

The clearest easterly horizon is the highest spot you can find. The planets will rise above the horizon as the sky lightens. It will be easier to see if you are further south.

The pair takes place in the early hours of the morning in Australia. Look to the east.
