The president of Paris Saint-Germain said that the final of the European club competition should be bigger than the Super Bowl. The 48-year-old businessman is said to have been debating ideas ahead of last week's ECA General Assembly for clubs to explore new commercial opportunities. He told The Athletic that he couldn't understand how the Super Bowl felt bigger than the league final. The Super Bowl and the U.S. generally have this mindset. It is not a good idea to have one match on the opening night where the winners take on a big team, but at least let's challenge the status quo. Each match needs to be entertaining. The Super Bowl drew 112 million viewers, making it the most watched final in the last five years, while the European League final draws between 400 million and 600 million spectators outside of the venue. During the invasion of Ukraine, Al-Khelaifi slammed the plans of the ESL.
- European Super League Q&A: Now what?
The European Super League was opposed to by Al-Khelaifi before he became chair of the ECA.
The media and commercial rights will be shared between the ECA and the 36 teams that will be included in the European club competition. According to Al-Khelaifi, the change has been forecast to grow the men's game's commercial value by 39%, but he added: "We still need to explore additional revenue streams together."
Digital innovation is one of the things we are looking for. We are thinking about event formats and experiences. How do we make each match an event in the best club competition? The new joint venture between ECA and UEFA should have a creative and entertainment department.
How do we make the group stages compelling? The time difference is a problem for both the U.S. and Asia. How can we work on international rights that have huge potential? We are thinking about all sorts of things.
