The Best New Artist award was presented at the 64th Annual GRAMMY Awards at MGM Grand Garden Arena on April 3, 2022, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Rich Fury is the photographer for The Recording Academy.

The 64th AnnualGrammy Awards aired Sunday night from Las Vegas, taking place in the shadow of the controversial Oscars ceremony from a week prior. The Recording Academy has dealt with internal strife, accusations of dealing backdoors, and the defection of some of music's biggest stars.

A younger group of superstars claimed their claim to the center of the pop world at the 2022, Grammys. Jon Batiste won the Album of the Year. The Foo Fighters, mourning the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins, swept all three categories, while Silk Sonic, the duo consisting of Anderson.Paak and Bruno Mars, won both Song and Record of the Year. For the second year in a row,Trevor Noah hosted. The best and worst moments of the night are listed.

Best: Jon Batiste

Jon Batiste won five awards, including Album of the Year for We Are. Batiste rose through the ranks of the jazz world to become the band leader for The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, and then decided to try his hand at piano. He described his pivot as inevitable when he was interviewed by Time.

Where is everything leading me toward? It feels like the way it has led me is to take the torch of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and be the Black pop star making Black pop masterpieces.

On Sunday night, Batiste rose to the occasion, delivering a performance that united many musical and cultural lineages. The performance brought the room to its feet, most notably the two people who were shown looking up at him, Billie Eilish and Finneas.

Batiste won the biggest prize of the night, the album of the year, and delivered one of the better awards show speeches in recent memory.

He said that his family's music gave him out-of-body experiences, as both his father and grandfather are on the album. Keep going.

Best: SZA and Doja Cat win their first Grammys for “Kiss Me More”

When SZA and Doja Cat won for best pop duo/group performance for their song "Kiss Me More", there was hardly a dry eye in the house. It was Doja and SZA who made the win memorable, from Doja being in the bathroom when it was announced to Lady Gaga helping SZA, who was on crutches, with her train as she walked to the stage.

Doja put aside her signature puckishness for a moment of gravitas at the end of her speech, which was a significant moment that wasn't lost on her.

Best: Lil Nas X’s exuberant medley

One of the liveliest performances of the night was provided by industry baby and prolific tweeter,Lil Nas X. In a performance that was as good as it was entertaining, rapper Nas X performed a set that featured four of his songs from his album, as well as a guest appearance from Jack Harlow. The Grammys were all the better for it, because it was the assignment thatLil Nas X understood.

Best: Olivia Rodrigo’s debut

It has been fifteen months since the internet was ablaze with the story of the driver license of the man. On Sunday, Rodrigo proved that he was more than just a flavor-of-the-month TikTok trend. She cried as if she was reliving her first teenage heartbreak, on a cinematic set of a dusty small town with birds in the background.

Despite not performing live until last year, she has shown on shows like Tiny Desk that she has huge pipes. This is my biggest dream come true, I won Best New Artist and Best Pop solo Performance.

Most Vegas: BTS

A group of multi-hyphenates with a love for pop culture and a penchant for showmanship were made for Vegas. Their performance of their #1 hit BUTTER was delivered with the craftsmanship and practiced joy of the most seasoned performers on the strip. The group began flirting with the it-girl of the night, who was named V, as she descended from the ceiling.

The group, dressed in suits, proceeded to live out their cosplay dreams of Mission Impossible and Now You See Me, jumping over laser beams and throwing cards across the room. As their shiny shoes swept across the floor, they didn't kick or jump out of place.

Best: Tribute to Ukraine

The Ukrainian president didn't get a chance to speak on behalf of his country at the Oscars, but he settled on speaking to the large audience. Zelensky emphasized the importance of music to Ukrainian culture in a pre-recorded video. He said in English that they sing to the wounded. You can fill the silence with your music.

The video was followed by a performance by John Legend and several Ukrainian artists that tied together biblical, African-American, and Ukrainian struggles for freedom and self.

Best: Billie Eilish’s sweet homage to Taylor Hawkins

One of the best performances of the night was delivered by Billie Eilish with a rock-powered rendition of the title track from her album Happier Than Ever. While Eilish and her brother/producer Finneas performed on a set that replicated the music video for the song, the most touching part of the performance may have been Eilish's tribute to Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who died less than a month ago. Eilish wore an oversized t-shirt with the visage of the late Hawkins, and his performance captured the energy that the Foo Fighters often embodied.

Least impactful: Trevor Noah

This year's ceremony was very different from the last one in that it was aimed at Vegas, but it was still hosted by the Daily Show host. Noah rushed through most of his jokes and didn't match that energy.

He did land a few zingers. Referencing the NFT obsession of some musicians, he joked, "You know it's hard when your favorite artists go from trying to sell you music to selling you pictures of digital monkeys."

Most played out: Jokes about the slap

It feels like it has been a long time since Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars. It feels like we've been living in the wake of it our entire lives, and Jerrod Carmichael confessed to never wanting to talk about it again.

The slap was the subject of a couple jokes on Sunday night, which were mostly met with strained guffaws. While presenting Song of the Year, Questlove jokingly told everyone in the room to stay 500 feet away from him.

Best: Celebrating non-stars

While pop stars dominated the night, lesser-known artists and the crews supporting them behind the scenes were given some shine. A second stage on the MGM roof was put in place because of the lack of performance slots inside the MGM Grand. This solution put artists who wouldn't have gotten a chance to play at the Grammys on television. All of them, from Aym to Billy Strings, showed off their talent, running circles around their more famous counterparts downstairs.

Several A-list performers were introduced by members of their crew tour, including wardrobe supervisors and production managers, who served as a reminder of how essential enormous teams are toward creating onstage magic, and how hard the touring industry has been hit by COVID-19. In an era of stan culture and idol worship, their presence was a welcome change of pace.
