Lance Lynn will have a 30 minute procedure on his right knee on Tuesday after an exam revealed a small tear in a tendon.
Lynn will be off the mound for four weeks, which means he is likely to miss up to eight weeks of the regular season.
It's part of the game, and I know we have a very deep and talented roster. We are going to face some adversity over the next seven months. The strength of the men in that room will serve us well.
Lynn had some minor knee issues last season that the Sox believe are the root cause of his current ailment.
Lynn had a 2.69 earned run average in 2021. He missed a couple of starts due to the knee issue, but the team re-signed him for two more years. He will miss up to two months.
The issue should be behind us by the time Lance returns. It gives an opportunity for some of the other arms.
Right-handed pitchers Vince Velasquez and Reynaldo Lopez are included in those arms.
The trade of Craig Kimbrel to the Los Angeles Dodgers and the need for Tommy John surgery for lefty relief pitcher Garrett Crochet have been linked to the injury. It has left the team a little thin on the mound. There is no doubt who will be the opening day starter. On Sunday, Lucas Giolito completed his spring training and will be in the rotation for the first game of the season.
Giolito and Lynn will have a new catcher. The Blue Jay's traded backups with the White Sox as Zack Collins was sent to Toronto.
We view him as a very strong defensive backstop and we think he's good at managing a pitching staff.
