Denzel Washington

There was a lot of chaos at the Oscars on Sunday night, but one of the most calming presences was on stage. The veteran actor was one of a few A-listers who joined Will Smith in the aftermath of his altercation with comedian Chris Rock; his influence was soothing enough that Smith thanked him during his emotional acceptance speech a few minutes later.

Washington talked with a pastor at the Jakes Leadership Summit this weekend about the devil and what happened that night. Jakes was told by Washington that when the devil ignores you, you know you're doing something wrong. The devil said to leave him at home. Maybe it's because you're trying to do something, right? The devil got a hold of the situation that night.

Washington wouldn't say what the three men prayed about. For the grace of God, go any of us. Who are we to condemn? I don't know all the ins and outs of the situation, but I know the only solution was prayer.

Smith resigned from The Academy last night, meaning he won't be eligible for Oscars voting going forward. He will not be asked to give out the Best Actress award again next year. Smith will be subject toDisciplinary proceedings from the body later this month, as Dave Rubin noted while accepting his resignation.

Variety has a story on it.
