Caleb Love will be giving Duke fans unpleasant dreams for a long time

Coach K announced last July that he would retire, and a scythe has followed his career ever since. On Saturday night, Duke's Final Four era came to an end. A familiar slayer was featured in the UNC victory over their arch-rival.

This was the worst Duke loss of the Coach K era and Love's role in putting the kibosh on his career made it more potent. Eric Maynor pulled up near the top of the key to defeat Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. It was worse than C.J. McCollum. Being dispatched by the nerds was a kick in the guts. UNC and Love had more cruel intentions.

Duke and UNC were in a close game for most of the second half. With 34 seconds remaining, Love paused near midcourt, scanned the floor, drove his defender into a hard screen from RJ Davis, rose up from the top of the key, and sank the coup de grâce. Love's dagger unleashed blood-curdling screams from Duke fans, followed by a deafening silence. Every Duke fan who has been traumatised by Love's shot will describe where they were at to their therapists for the next decade-plus.

Love is a murderer who has been holding onto that dagger for a while. He spent the last two years saving his most ruthless performances. Love's may be the most interesting villain in Duke-UNC lore.

Love had a deep affinity for Duke. His dad told Benjamin Hochman that his son wanted to attend Duke.

After Duke secured a commitment from Jeremy Roach, the Heels sophomore point guard only committed to UNC during his senior year at Christian Brothers High School.

Love told TheDevilsDen.com that before Jeremy committed, they wanted him to be the point guard and his teammates to come in and compete for a national championship.

Jeremy Roach was the fourth ranked point guard in the class of 2020. Cunningham was the only point guard who was ahead of Love. Love was considered the 18th best recruit by the hoops recruiting database. Love chose to wear the Carolina blue when Roach was offered by Duke two years before he could enroll.

Coach K has been the best college hoops coach in the past 40 years. However, the point guard he turned down being the difference between Duke and UNC is an indelible dent in the lore of Krzyzewski which will be impossible to buff out, along with Roach's eight points and 18 percent shooting.

Love had a season-high in a win over Duke. Two of his highest scoring games have been against Duke. He scored 25 points in his first win against Duke. He was shooting 35 percent from the field up to that point, and had been hovering around averages of 10 points per game. He shot 56.3 percent from the field and 4-of-5 from behind the line. He scored 18 on 50 percent shooting and handed out seven assists in UNC's 18-point victory.

Love's record against Duke was blemished by the measly eight points he scored in a Feb. 5 loss in which he drained only 3 out of 5 attempts and shot 1-for-5 from deep.

He crashed Coach K's home finale celebration. Love scored 22 despite his perfect 12-for-12 shooting at the free-throw line, but their obliteration of Duke overshadowed him. Love's 28 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the field were even more remarkable when weighed against the struggles Bacot had inside.

No matter what happens with Love, he is a folk hero for UNC and etched in the memories of Duke fans as a terror.
