The San Diego Padres are the latest team to take advantage of the Oakland A&Ts fire sale.
The Padres acquired Sean Manaea from Oakland, according to Jeff Passan.
According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Padres will receive right-handed pitching prospect Aaron Holiday, with Oakland getting Euribiel Angeles and Adrian Martinez in return.
The Oakland team has been reduced in size in order to reduce payroll. Last month, Matt Chapman, Matt Olson and Chris Bassitt were all traded.
Manaea signed a one-year contract on March 22. He was going to be the highest-paid player in Oakland in 2022, but Stephen Piscotty is now the highest-paid player.
Danny Vietti @DannyViettiWith Sean Manaea headed to San Diego, Stephen Piscotty now owns the highest salary on the Oakland A’s ($7.58 million).
Passan thinks that the Padres will have a surplus of starting pitching when the trade becomes official.
San Diego has a rotation of Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, Mike Clevinger, and Nick Martinez. Ryan Weathers and Mackenzie Gore are competing for a spot in the starting group.
The odd man out could be Clevinger, who is coming back from Tommy John surgery. He has allowed eight earned runs on seven hits during spring training.
The addition of Manaea will allow the Padres to play things slowly.
The surplus arm for San Diego is better than Manaea. The American League lead was shared by the 30-year-old. He finished the year with a 3.81 ERA and194 strikeouts in 179.1 appearances.
Holiday was a 13th-round pick. The Philadelphia native did not give up a run in his first season in baseball.
Two decent prospects will be returned in the deal. MLB.com ranked Angeles as the 12th best prospect in San Diego's system.
Angeles was signed as an international free agent. The Dominican Republic native hit four homers and drove in 64 runs in 105 games at second base last season.
The right-handed pitcher finished his career at Triple-A. He had a 3.38 ERA and 122 strikeouts in 125 appearances.
