Frank Gore decided to retire after going unsigned during the NFL season.
The five-time Pro Bowler said he will sign a one-day contract with the San Francisco 49ers before walking away for good.
Gore said that he would probably retire in a couple months. I told York that I wanted to be a Niner. We are working on that right now, and then we are going to sit down with my agent and talk about me working in the front office. I like to look at talent. I enjoy evaluating talent and ball. They know that I know what it takes to be a football player.
After being taken in the third round of the 2005 draft, Gore spent his first 10 seasons with the 49ers. After three years with the Indianapolis Colts, he joined the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and New York Jets.
Gore missed only 15 games over the course of his career. His 241 games played are the most ever by a running back, and he is third on the all-time list with 16,000 yards.
Gore will wait a few years to see if he will wear a gold jacket. His consistency makes him a lock for Canton, but it would be unfair to say he was the best at his position. He kept his body healthy by moving the chains in chunks of four or five yards a pop.
The Hall has players who had shorter careers. The committee values longevity over burning bright if Gore is elected.
