SAVANNAH, Ga. The family of a black man who was shot and killed by a state trooper during a traffic stop in Georgia will receive a $4.8 million settlement.

The settlement amount was confirmed by the office of Georgia's attorney general.

The trooper who killed Lewis was fired by the Georgia State Patrol and charged with murder. The prosecution of the former trooper, Jacob Thompson, was put on hold last summer after a grand jury declined to indict him.

Andrew Lampros said state officials agreed to mediation to avoid a civil lawsuit over Lewis' death. He said that Betty Lewis is hopeful but frustrated that Thompson will eventually stand trial.

This is a classic case of driving while black.

On August 7, 2020, Thompson tried to pull Lewis over for a broken tail light near the Georgia-South Carolina state line. The trooper shot Lewis in the head after he failed to stop.

Thompson stated in his incident report that he opened fire as Lewis revved his engine and turned his steering wheel, as if he was trying to ram the trooper.

Thompson was charged with murder and assault a week after the shooting. The car battery disconnected when Lewis hit the ditch made it impossible for Thompson to say that he revved his engine.

Peak said that the dash camera video showed that the trooper got out of his patrol vehicle and fired the shot that killed Lewis.

An attorney for Thompson said the former trooper shot Lewis in self-defense.

The Lewis family wants the District Attorney to try again to get an indictment.

The slain man's family wants federal authorities to bring charges. In consultation with the FBI, the office of acting U.S. Attorney David Estes issued a statement last fall about the circumstances of Lewis' death.

The state admitted no wrongdoing in the settlement of civil claims over the death of Lewis.

There is some confirmation that Mr. Lewis was worth something.
